World premiere in the German capital Berlin: on Friday, as part of its “Shaping Future Transportation 2015 – Campus Efficiency” event, Mercedes-Benz presented its latest truck engine. The Latest Generation of the OM 471 heavy-duty truck engine is an engineering masterpiece. The engine offers fuel savings of up to 3% compared to its predecessor, reducing operating costs and lowering CO2 emissions at the same time, and ensuring that truck customers and the environment benefit equally from this latest unit to emerge from Mercedes-Benz Trucks Engine Development.

The OM 471 engine is part of the successful platform of heavy-duty truck engines of Daimler Trucks. The world’s cleanest and cutting-edge engine platform has to comply with stringent emissions standards in Europe, North America and Japan, since the engines are used in heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz trucks as well as in Freightliner and Western Star trucks in North America and FUSO trucks in Asia. To date around 250,000 of these engines have been fitted worldwide, over 100,000 of these work in Mercedes-Benz trucks. Mercedes-Benz Trucks invested 60 million Euro for the enhancement of this platform.

Stefan Buchner, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, comments: “We are keen to shape the future of road transport. The Latest Generation of our successful OM 471 engine is proof of this. Its higher fuel efficiency of up to 3% benefits our customers and the environment.”

The enhanced efficiency is the result of several internal engine modifications. Improvements in fuel injection, higher compression, a new exhaust gas turbocharger and a reduced rate of exhaust gas recirculation help lower fuel consumption. In average service with mileage of around 130,000 km/year, a Mercedes-Benz Actros with the new engine will consume around 1100 fewer litres of fuel and emit around three tonnes less of CO2.

Efficiency is a central part of the Daimler Trucks and Mercedes-Benz Trucks strategy; along with safety and connectivity it defines the company’s role as technology leader in the sector. Given that diesel makes up 30% of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a truck, fuel efficiency is an essential criterion when customers decide which vehicle to purchase. Lower fuel consumption also means lower CO2 emissions. Improvements in efficiency therefore serve both economic and ecological objectives.

Emission-free transportation technologies have been available for mass production for over 25 years, but without the needed infrastructure. Cars – affordable for the general public – with engines of about 1 litre fuel consumption, or cars with real water-using engines have been ready for production for over 2 decades now. These high-tech prototypes were successfully tested in countries like Canada, USA, Australia, Norway, England, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Israel, China, India, South Korea and Japan. We should already be manufacturing 35-40 million emission-free vehicles annually, and H2O engine systems should have been producing energy instead of our fossil-based and nuclear power plants. Entire technological documentations of such technologies have vanished in the EU`s Institute for Innovation and Technology, and, according to the legislation in order, it is right to be so. The expense involved in the production of such technologies is half of that of the traditional engines, they weigh about 70% less, and they can provide a huge torque. Their working range can be several thousand miles, cars could weigh 200 kg less, and their price could be 3-4000 Euros less. Segments of nearly the entire car industry secretly have the prototypes and successful tests. At the present moment we are poisoning our environment just out of mere arrogance and greed. We live in a cheap and indecent world. I firmly claim that we simply shouldn`t lie to 7 billion people, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. This information is entirely true and I hold myself accountable for its validity.

    Sincerely, Istvan Gazso, inventor

Most useless piss of Mercedes Engine ever made. As African truckers who use second/third hand Mercedes Actros, this are among the worst Mercedes Actros trucks coming into the African market from Europe. First Generation Actros V6 engines were amazing, and would do another 20 years in the harsh African terrain. But this crap breaks in months when exposed to the harsh, hot, dusty(muddy) terrain in the congo. Have a tendency to leak engine oil into the intercooler and seize themselves up out of nowhere. Absolute piss of crap.
