Why The American Car Fleet Is Getting So Old
Why The American Car Fleet Is Getting So Old
In 2021, the average age of vehicles on the road reached a record 12.1 years. Every driver that chooses to hold on to a car for another year is postponing a trip to the dealership, and some industry analysts wonder if rising vehicle ages and prices indicate trouble for new car sales in the future. Automakers are stuffing cars with new technology and improvements but will that be enough to keep buyers wanting the latest and greatest?

Why The American Car Fleet Is Getting So Old
You don’t need a bunch of screens inside a car. They are a distraction and raise the cost by a lot. Also, the keyless entry raises chances of the car getting stolen. Who wants debt for a car with a bunch of bells and whistles they don’t need?
It’s because the prices are ridiculous and they want you to finance and screw over the average American, car payments+insurance+monthly rent+ everyday expenses and average Americans aren’t having the paychecks to cover the costs and have money to save so then long term it screws them over even more financially while they’re young and could’ve planned for their future
Wealthy people have money to buy new cars. Middle class can’t afford them so they keep cars longer. That’s why cheaper cars don’t sell as well as expensive ones . That caused car makers to remove them from dealership lines.
I think a 2017+ Tesla is the best option now. No more wasting money on gas.
My Jeep XJ is 21 yrs. old with over 360,000 miles. It still goes strong and since my recent retirement I put on it only about 4,000 annually.
I have enough time now to fix some things that need attention. According to actuarial tables I have about 16 yrs. ahead of me that translate to
something around … say 50,000 miles to go. I am sure that my Jeep will make these 50K easily and that it will serve me faithfully until its services will be no longer required to take me for my final voyage.
Is this a commercial for Toyota?
Great for the Environment 😊
Sustainable
not as old as cuba or indonesia
The 4 GMs are essentially all the same, big V8 SUVs that go to the kid’s soccer games & back & nothing else. Lincoln LOL that one just takes gramps & granny to the grandkid’s soccer games. Hilarious not a single Chrysler, no Jeeps on the list. After owning one I can understand why.
iphone 9? what .. lol
12.1 year old car is not that old. Best cars were made up to 1998. Modern cars won’t last that long.
In india endeavour and mustang is very famous but ford is leaving india
What about Mercedes BMW VW?
In the USA, cars are used and tossed yearly like candy wraps. (the most expensive ones)
american still make cars? forget it, stick with japanese car
No no no we don’t want more technology it’s just more expensive to maintain more sensors to give you problems making even previous bands that were reliable vey un reliable…. Lexus for a good example. If my camera stops working on my cell it won’t stop it from making calls. Cellphones are 100xs cheaper and easier to buy with 1 paycheck… Don’t compare a car to a cellphone.
Car age by miles or years 2 decades or 200,000 miles
जनसंख्या के दृष्टिकोण से उत्पादन दोगुना किया जा सकता हैं 💯👍👍👍👍👍
I drive a 1993 Buick Century, gave it a major overhaul in 2016. It’s still holding up pretty well.
I had a 1992 Honda accord 4 cylinder sedan that had 330K miles on it when I sold it in 2005. It was still running perfectly although the muffler had fallen off. My next car was a 1998 Honda accord coupe that had 320K miles on it when I sold it in 2017. The transmission was going out when I sold it but the guy who bought it only drove it around town for a year so he didn’t care. I currently have 215K on my 2012 Accord coupe. These Hondas are absolutely amazing in their longevity.
i love my 1999 toyota rav4. it works great and i love how compact and simple it is. its probably going to outlive me 😛
Welp. Used cars aren’t cheap anymore either. I could literally rent a U-Haul as my main mode of transportation and it’d probably take years before the price caught up with what used cars are now even accounting for gas mileage.
My 02 suburban has 263k on it
I hate moden cars, they are too expensive and cost too much to maintain, If I can’t fix it myself I’m not interested, My daily driver I’ve had for 30 years now and have no near plans on replacing it.
Bro, an Iphone doesnt cost 38k
EVs won’t last. In the end it’s going be more expensive. They’re just “woke Hollywood” and “Elitist” schemes. If 20% of vehicles in US were EV where would we charge them all?
X3 as many land cruisers have 200k miles over a suburban, how many more suburban are sold? How many of those have been in wrecks?
i cant imagine my monthly car payment higher than $300-$400 and my rent at about $1000. But today when the rent went up to $1500+ and average new cars are $40k no thank you i’ll be driving my paid off car
Honda to
i have a 2005 tacoma, 2005 honda, and 2013, because cars are so expensive
America – we are a car based country we don’t need public transport
Old , rusting cars
Cracked roads
Crumbling infrastructure
Or people are starting to use their bikes more and more..
maybe it’s because no one can afford to buy a new car anymore, or very very few people can afford to
I have a 5 time tradition of buying a 12-15 year old Crown Vic/Grand Marquis under 100k miles, driving it an additional 150k miles, then changing it out for a newer 12-15 year old one, each under $5000. My latest is a 2007 I picked up this year after sleeping in a garage most of it’s life. Only $6000 and 26000 miles. I will drive it for the next 10 years.
Financing a new car is madness – if you don’t have enough money to buy one, don’t buy one. The exception is if you need one to make money, in which case taking on some productive debt can be okay but just go for a fairly priced reliable car rather than a new car.
Some of these guys are out of touch. GM hardly makes reliable cars anymore and that is why they are getting hammered by Honda and Toyota. People do not want to deal with a piece of crap that needs to get repaired often. And companies shouldn’t raise prices so aggressively just because they want too. People stop buying because it’s expensive and Japanese companies make reliable cars. My household has bought 3 new Hondas and 2 Toyotas over the past 6 years. We haven’t had to take any of the cars to mechanic not even once that is how good they are and should be. My neighbor got two Chevys and that car was at the dealer 6 times within the first year of ownership. Make cars reliable and customers will keep coming back.
American companies are nutritious for charging more for less features …
I dont want technology in my car minimum thank you
Great Car Shortage of 2020-2024
There is no iPhone 9
I’m still driving my 2005 Mazda 3. It doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles of todays cars, but its only got 125k miles so why should I trade it in? It’s the only new car I ever bought. Nowadays, I won’t even set foot in a dealership. I prefer to buy from a private seller and save the dealer fees which are ridiculous in FL. It’s only flashy TV commercials that tell us we have to buy the latest vehicle or we’re missing out.
Still have my 87 toyota pickup 280,000 and counting.
Also have a 94 with 306,000. Both run good, are practical for my job/ the things I like to do and most importantly save me money, I have no reason to buy a new car.
I realized that if I had a good used car I could retire early. I did. New cars cost way to much.
Still driving my 02 4runner! Purrs like a kitten.
They’re pricing there self right out of business.
New cars are simply not durable. That comment is absolute garbage. Old pre 1984 cars are far more durable. My 1975 model still is like a new car to drive. Both my landcruisers work hard, real hard. One has 680000km the other 400000km. No issues, still drive virtually as new. All modern cars are absolute garbage. Fancy but garbage. Not durable at all.
Start making new cars but with the technology of 90s to early 2000s. Stop making cars with boring colors and that look the same in shape. More square cars, more chrome, less egg shaped crap like SUVs and crossovers.
I don’t put too many miles on my 2012 Honda Civic anyway. My $500 bicycle easily gets 20 miles per grilled chicken sandwich, and gets me home from work faster than my car in rush hour traffic.
in the Caribbean we already Toyota vehicles are really reliable
Maybe I don’t want to buy a new car because the sort of car I like is DISAPPEARING FROM THE US MARKET!!! 😡
