Why American and European Trucks Are So Different

American and European semi-trucks are very different, in America you see all the trucks with a long nose, and wheelbase, with the cabin behind the engine, whereas trucks in Europe are cab-over trucks where the cabin is above the engine.

But why are they so different, and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Let’s take a look at it.

I was in Anaheim years ago ( motel 6) on a 3cday stopover on way to OZ. There was a beaut Kenworth parked at the cafe behind Motel 6.I was looking at the rig when the driver came out the cafe.He showed me all round it .He was amazed when we discussed wages. I was earning more than him in the UK driving a Ford D1000 artic home every night with the option of a week away every 6 weeks or so from home every night .
I will admit that as truckers go I was in probably the best paid in the UK at the time .And I had the sense to stay in that job with that co for 33 years.

The European driver also spends long weeks in the truck in conditions that an American driver would not want to work in at all. In Europe, a lot of time is spent waiting at borders, especially the Schengen zone. On top of this, there is a complicated working time system, which prolongs the stay on the road.

  14. Jan hANSEN on December 30, 2022 at 3:48 am

Not a truck driver (in english im not, in norwegian i am!). I love design of americans trucks more than european. How is american trucks compare to european ones on icy conditions, straight and curvy roads?

  15. redi goxha on December 30, 2022 at 3:49 am

The speed part is a big lie most motorways in europe have speed limit up to 130 km/h and German autobhan have no speed limit we don’t have to work as much as Americans on trucks we have different ways to move wares by boats or by trains. In europe are a lot of ship ports even landlocked countries like switzerland have it’s ports.

  16. Ramin Noori on December 30, 2022 at 3:50 am

Whatever the difference is all I know is the American trucks are the shitty uncomfortable trucks including roads in the use riding donkey and American trucks are nothing different

  17. mr 2010 on December 30, 2022 at 3:54 am

Hmm. I always wondered that. Well I mean American trucks are much cooler looking than European ones.

  18. MN Drummer on December 30, 2022 at 3:55 am

This could have been a lot shorter. America is better. Our roads are better, trucks are better, homes are better, etc.

No real need to go any further. Short answer…………. America is better. Ahhhhh, now isn’t that easy.

    God Bless America.

US is just so large you need to sleep in the cabin to complete a haul. European hauls are usually way shorter.

  20. Jory Johnson on December 30, 2022 at 3:57 am

11 hours driving in USA 😁 one hour looking for parking 10 hours for driving, God bless Walmart 😁

Because in Europe we are poorer and our things are more optimized

  23. James Brown on December 30, 2022 at 3:58 am

Germany should just right now modify her rules and regulations with regard to truck loads? It seems the time could be there just right now. (‘Gigaliner’ was a not too good name anyway.) Just change the numbers a little, without putting new and loud bages onto, 44 or 46 tons (instead of 40 max today) could be good for the environment as well – coming with more overall wheels (maybe one axle more? Or however) to keep the specific pressure to the tarmac on the current level. 10% of truck drivers already missing? An increase from 40 to 44 or 46 tons could help? A better legal framework could help and provide for some relief quick. (And the number of trucks in traffic jams could reduce as well.)

I am always surprised how little a truck people see – the max number of car drivers don’t see trucks at all unless they are in their way. But they can’t tell the differences between a V8 or straight six or a midsize from a full size cab even if they stand right in front of or count the number axles. There are just not interrested in. Some see if somebody points onto the differences, but most haven’t even got time for that. They want goods main door – via red carpet if possible – how society gets them inside, they are not interrested in most of the time. Corrugated boxes !are ugly. (A little bit like soldiers, ‘we need protection and resources but.’)

(Up to now I didn’t know that 129 or137 km/h could be allowed in some places of the US.)

  27. M Mario on December 30, 2022 at 4:02 am

Because the americans much morre inteligent and make their confort to their stile, and europeans..gridy and less knowledge on the trucks and punishment for the drivers.

  28. Jason R Wolf on December 30, 2022 at 4:03 am

12 hours for American truck drivers? lol uh NO! 11/14/70 rule. 11 hours drive 14 hours work 70 hours max unless you’re on a recap where hours are based on a carry over time from the 8 day previous hours driven.

  29. Paul on December 30, 2022 at 4:04 am

Just like the Tesla semi for example, it’s made to get from point a to point B not sleep in it like a traveling hobo

  30. Grod123 on December 30, 2022 at 4:04 am

As an Army brat and growing up overseas. The semi trucks were one of the first things I would notice when leaving the airports. How there are none that have that America, long nose style build and are all flat in the front.

  31. Camiel Geurts on December 30, 2022 at 4:05 am

    good and informative video.
Only european trucks have different laws around lengt for every combination. The truck they display in the video (tractor trailer) has a maximum lengt of 16,5 meters. The length is says here is for a boxtruck+trailer. And we also have LZV trailers, And those can have a maximum of 25,25 meters. We have a lot of laws around being a truck driver. If you want to become one in europe, you have to become a mechanic+ study al of the traffic and truck laws of whole europe + get within 5years 35 hours of education otherwise your papers will get withdrawn and then you will not be legally authorized to drive. And of all, dutch driver are the best of all europe.

  32. BLUE ORB FILMS on December 30, 2022 at 4:05 am

European trucks are aesthetically more beautiful.

  33. Araz Zeyniyev on December 30, 2022 at 4:08 am

boils down to geography I see.

  34. Alessio Brabus on December 30, 2022 at 4:08 am

I’m an Italian truck driver, but I’ve always dreamed of driving a Kenworth W900 (or more recently, Kenworth T680 or Peterbilt 579)
But I’ll have to settle for the narrow bunk of the Iveco Stralis.

  35. Maurice Haaij on December 30, 2022 at 4:08 am

Trucks in Europe have a legal maximum length length, so shorter truck makes a longer trailer possible. That’s the only significant reason for EU trucks being what they are. The other comparisons are irrelevant

  36. Ian Foster on December 30, 2022 at 4:12 am

  40. Craig Robertson on December 30, 2022 at 4:15 am

Probably has something to do with the size of the roads.

  43. Peter Gecsei on December 30, 2022 at 4:18 am

I was an OTR trucker in the europe for 3 years. we all europeans live in the truck that is usually given by the company, or the drivers rent the truck. believe or not, it is harder to live in a small sleeper that has fewer equipment. all the possibilities we have, to get drunk and listen the radio. or push your phone.

  44. ManudB on December 30, 2022 at 4:19 am

    130+ km/h in a 40 Ton semi.. Murica..

  45. Bruce Carbon Lakeriver on December 30, 2022 at 4:20 am

I’d prefer a lengthened cabover. For having a better camping experience but I won’t miss the technical benefits of european trucks. Retarders, no overheating issues since the 80’s, disc brakes since the 90’s and so on.

  46. Paul Sabian on December 30, 2022 at 4:21 am

Can’t even get an average American car down a side street this side of the pond with parked cars, them big trucks wouldn’t even fit our main roads.
