Which F150 engine would a Ford Technician pick? 2020!
Which F150 engine would a Ford Technician pick? 2020!
Back in 2017, we asked our technicians which engine they would choose if they were to buy a new F150. 3 years later, they have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of each of these engines! So now, we are asking them again, on the new revised version of the engines. Which would you choose?

I work for Ford manufacturing. Number of my coworkers own F150s. A few guys with 5 L talk about excessive oil consumption. One is waiting for a new engine under warranty. V8 was a solid option until Ford begun plasma coating the cylinders instead of putting steel sleeves. As they screwed up with there plastic oil pans that keep leaking even if you put a new plug. Can somebody explain the rationale behind all of that?
All the people that picked the turbo/eco-boost don’t work on cars they work in the office, all the people that really know what there talking about stay away from turbo, for many good reasons.
We have an older neighbor who has a F150. I asked him if it had a 302 V8. He said,
“No ! It’s got a 5. O liter V8”.
I responded by saying, Oh, that’s a great engine.
I giggled as I walked away
I went with the 5.0. Very glad I did
Now somebody answer me this, what’s the most reliable engine?
I knew this in the 80’s!! Why Ford ever deviated from the venerable 5.0 is a mystery? GM & RAM also have too many choices! Japanese trucks have less engine choices and less problems!
2.7 EB and 3.5 EB is job security. IMO wrong people to ask. JMO. My pick is the 5.0. I stay away from turbo.
just shows none wanted to loose their jobs!
3.5L all day for me
I have a 2015 f150 with a 5.0, it has 130,000 miles with zero issues, great truck.
Forget those other trash engines just go with the 7.5L 460cui v8 then adapt it to your rig… you’re welcome.
I’ve had the 2.7 in all my F150 trucks since 2016. It’s a great motor. Reliable, strong, and fuel efficient while only using 87 octane fuel.
Pretty sad nobody has heard the jet engine sound a 3.5 EB puts out with a cold air intake and flowmaster exhaust. Literally sounds like a jet engine at full throttle.
220k on my 2008 F150 4.6l … running strong. Just need it to keep tickin until my Cybertruck gets here
Wow…funny..no trans,women,women of color..working as techs.,hmmm…is that racism,or something else??
7.3 power stroke
It’s too bad that Ford doesn’t bring back the 4.9L (300) In-line 6cyl.
I’ve owned 3 of them and got over 250K trouble free mileage and the most miles I’ve put on my 4.9L In-line 6cyl was a whopping 497K trouble free miles
Its comforting to see all the old timers choose the ecoboost.
Engines.
Motors are really electric.
I bought a 2021 2.7L. This video was a MAJOR factor in my decision.
Easier to work on….ask that question
The 302 (5.0L) V8 has been around since the 60s.
The 3.5 V6 has problems with the turbos and the 2.7 turbo V6 is a terrible engine.
If you actually look at how the engines are designed; there’s not much different about the 5.0L except a lack of turbos and lack of forged internals. The injection, variable timing, etc. is there in the 5.0L just like the ecoboost, there’s just more of it.
This is probably why most of these were saying “Because V8”.
The guys in the shop say 5.0 for reliability… the guys inside pick the 2.7, because of too many problems with the 5.0.
No love the 3.3L 😂
Not exactly enthusiastic about giving a opinion.,Thet dont want the boss mad at them,They should talk about 5.0 oil consumption ,personally that worries me with a sixty thousnd dollar truck but thats just me.
Ur a crook along with your dealership watson!
Im a tech, I’ve had my ’12 3.5 EB for 9 years now, did my timing set at 85k and that was literally the only major work i’ve had to do ( only other issue was a stuck caliper ). Luckily I had already known the death rattle would come sometime after 65/70k miles so I was prepared for a timing/phaser job, and at the time there was only a TSB not a recall on it, either way I was doing the job myself but for people that aren’t mechanics luckily they’ve updated it to a TSB that can be replaced/updated for free. The 3.5 EB is one of the best engines I’ve ever owned And they have only improved on it through the years, dual injectors to combat carbon building on valves from the direct injection, better turbos, better intercooler/intake, better PCV. Don’t be fooled, they both are great engines but one will tow as much as a V8 and burn half the fuel all while giving you ever bit of power you ask of it
Can’t even understand what some of them are saying, specially the ones talking about the EB. Subtitles can’t even make out what they’re saying.
Me Dodge better sound .. but 3.5 that what i choose.. is Power and millage ..
This is awesome, great to hear it from the technicians. Can you do one on the ford transit 6 eco boost or 6 naturally aspirated? Thanks
Powerboost is what I choose.
"Eets jest a great eenjun"
I have the 2013 3.5 ecoboost and engine died at 130k miles
Chevy 454
No one ever talks about the 3.5l naturally aspirated f150
Zero, none, zip. Anyone with a braincell left, wouldn’t buy a Ford since 2000
Very helpful
A natural V8 will always last longer than a turbo engine. Any real mechanic knows this.
And it’s not fair asking if a brand new vehicle can hold up…. it hasn’t stood the test of time. The 5.0 has been a ford engine (maybe with slight tweaks) for decades. It’s stood the test of time.
Does anyone know what problem the technician mentions about the 3.5L Ecoboost model at the 3:08 mark? I’ve tried to determine what he says but I can’t make out his words.
Didn’t ford make a 5.4L in 2004? Didn’t they have lots of problems with it?
A ford comercial
Seeing him shoulder deep in a Raptor that’s no older than 3 says a lot.
lmao the 2.7 is absolutly junk!!!! most eco-boosts are but i literally know 4 people personally who have had them all grenade… two 2.7 eco boosts with low miles just exploding, and a 3.5 also… they are junk!
The 5.0 guys definitely never pull a camp trailer.
Big issue is as a farmer I can’t find a effen 5.0. All the dealer have rhe 3.5 EB and sorry not pulling a trailer full of cattle with a 6 cyl.
I’LL TAKE THE OLE GREEN GRILLE LESS TURD IN THE PARKING LOT WITH THE 351 WINDSOR!!!
I can tell you what engine these guys would pick before they even pick. Everyone has a use and thats the engine they will go with
I hope I don’t regret it from a reliability standpoint, but I ordered one with the 5.0 this week.
