There are three major forms of lead-acid batteries used in cars which will be discussed in this video: Flooded Lead Acid, Spiral Cell Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), and Flat Plate AGM.

Flooded lead acid batteries are the most common lead-acid battery found in OEM applications. They offer a cost-effective solution, however they can require more maintenance, and must be mounted upright to avoid spills.

Spiral Cell & Flat Plate Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries offer unique advantages over traditional flooded lead acid style batteries. They are maintenance free, and because they use 99.99% pure lead, they offer better cold cranking amps and deep cycling characteristics. They are also more flexible for mounting, as the absorbed glass mat medium prevents acid from spilling.

Question: Flooded vs. AGM; typically, a flooded battery should be charged at 13.6VDC (standard setup for OEM voltage regulators); AGM "prefers" a charging voltage of About 14.4VDC(??).
Situation: when replacing the OEM flooded battery with an AGM, the original 13.6VDC charging system may not be effective in charging an AGM?
Also, "newer"/ more common Permanent Magnet alternators (vs. wire-wound stator) "presumes" a 14.4VDC charging voltage? i.e. when "upgrading" from flooded to AGM, the voltage regulator should also be "updated"?

What’s your thought on LiFePO4 car battery?

  3. wydopnthrtl on February 11, 2023 at 10:24 am

Prices of AGM are getting disproportionate to flooded. SO… in my case of a group 65 @$84 vs $230+…. exactly why is an AGM worth the extra expense?

Optima. That’s ths company that closed its US plant to move production to Mexico. No, thank you.

I heard since production been moved to Mexico, quality had gone down the toilet. No thanks.

  8. bluesky1986 on February 11, 2023 at 10:33 am

Optima was great 10 years ago when they came out but now everyone else has AGM and they are better. Optima is the type of company that sits on their 10 year old technology as everyone else surpasses them and wonder why they will go out of business eventually

  9. Sophia Marchildon on February 11, 2023 at 10:33 am

Is there weight, size difference to each types of batteries? What are the specs of the three different types? Can you make a clear table showing number of cycles, maximum energy contained, "crank power", cost, etc, so we can have a simple summary overview?

This sounded way to much like a here are cool batteries from Optima™ ©

What yall recommend? Was thinking of buying 2 yellow too optimas.

  14. Just1Spark on February 11, 2023 at 10:38 am

Its a shame what happened to these batteries and the US folks who made them. 🙁 Used to be great.

JSYK: Johnson Controls sold-off its Power Solutions division back in 2018/2019 to Brookfield Business Partners, and has become Clarios.
Also, Toyota has been using OEM batteries from Johnson Controls since roughly around 2013, and are probably still using them with Clarios. Toyota has previously used OEM batteries from Panasonic (formerly Matsushita Electrical Industrial International), including in around 2009.

Sears has sold its DieHard brand to Advance Auto Parts, and their batteries are now made by Clarios. To market the announcement, they hired Bruce Willis, and you can guess what & why.

I have a 2020 Rav4 XLE Premium can I put the optima yellow battery?

  29. Bruce McCreary on February 11, 2023 at 10:56 am

The great disappointment of AGM batteries is that the cost never came down, even though they are using less lead. The life is only 50% better than a wet battery, so only where acid spills or higher current charging/discharigng efficiency are important are they worth the extra cost. 3x the life is baloney. 3x the cost is pretty close. I use both AGM and wet lead batteries as well for several different applications in the last 12 years.

  30. Richard Smith on February 11, 2023 at 10:56 am

I purchased a red top Optima battery about 3 months ago and thought they were a bit expensive. When I started reading I then find they are made in Mexico ????? Why are they not made in the USA where a higher price I could understand.

  31. Peter Hicks on February 11, 2023 at 10:57 am

From what i understand An AGM charge at a different rate to flooded lead acid battery to avoid short life damage !

  32. Electric on February 11, 2023 at 10:57 am

Can you answer why a special charger is needed to charge AGM batteries even though they are charged in car by the same source that charges all types of batteries without issue? So why is a special charger needed?

  33. John Quinn on February 11, 2023 at 10:57 am

Too bad optima is trash made in Mexico

  34. Dylan X on February 11, 2023 at 11:00 am

When I look at the battery how do I know which one is AGM and which on is STD?

  35. Rockfordhx2 on February 11, 2023 at 11:02 am

Optima has been running the agm battery game for. Over 2 decades from what I remember and I been using optima since I’d say my first car in 2008 never looked back 2

  36. Gail Adams on February 11, 2023 at 11:04 am

You did a great detail explanation between the flooded and closed systems!! 👍 I’ve always bought my batteries at AutoZone and I buy the top-of-the-line stuff for my car and pay a high price for it. My batteries have lasted way past the warranty because I took care of them. I only use the flooded ones. Many times I have forgotten to turn my lights off at night and my battery had to be charged up. I let it run for a half an hour then take it driving for awhile and they were great batteries. The last battery that was put in by my auto technician without my knowledge was another unknown closed battery that they said was a great battery. BS. After two months and I charged the battery after I left my lights on and let it run for a half an hour and drive it. A couple days later I drove it and it was okay. Couple days later it was dead, dead dead I tried charging it up and it wouldn’t work. So this is when I decided to check out the difference between the closed systems and the flooded systems. I think this kind of battery would be kind I would want for my car because it’s an older car taged classic 1996 Thunderbird with only 65,000 true miles on it. And it runs like a charm and I still race it! I would consider buying this battery. Thank you.

Thanks for the video, even if I kept looking at the 911 Porsche in the background which looks like my 1984 also guards red. Sickens me that I sold it.

  48. LegoBuilder on February 11, 2023 at 11:17 am

The prices that this battery have reach in the last years is ridiculous, for something made in Mexico, I remember having one and I just paid $120 back in the time with a 7 years warranty, 3 of them free replacement and the rest prorated, now you are telling me that this battery is double the price, cut in less and a half the warranty and cut the quality of the battery, is not worth it with the price of that battery, I can buy at least 3 batteries for my car with 3 years warranty, each one, so, 9 years of warranty for the price of 3.

  49. JD JD on February 11, 2023 at 11:19 am

Just get the deka flat cell agm. Last twice as long for half as much! Oh and made in USA not Mexico like others!
