You’re probably more than familiar with language like “stage 2 turbo” or “stage 3 tune” but if we really pressed you on the different stages of tuning, would you be able to lay out a definitive set of guidelines for what those stages actually mean? Does bumping up each stage mean I’m going to double my horsepower? Triple? Dare I say it, quadruple?! Well it’s pretty simple actually! There’s baby stage 1-5 and then there is big boy stage 1-5, baby stage 250-600whp and big boy stage is 700whp – 3000whp+ so yes many variations of stages lol but nothing to scratch your head about lol even if you don’t think these numbers are accurate it’s similar to numbers that are or other peoples ideas of stages.
In Belgium it’s like this.
– Stage 1: ECU Tune
– Stage 2: ECU Tune, Intercooler, Exhaust, Downpipe, (Kw) Air filter
– Stage 3: ECU Tune, Hybrid Turbo, injectors, intake manifold, hp pump, and more

It’s funny to think that most cars are actually just super cars secretly with a tune and some mods. Lol
The best part of Gran Turismo is after you fully stage out your car you can race modify it. The surprise that came along with what it look like after the race modification was the coolest. They should totally bring that back to like Forza or something.

I will try a car with 25 hrs power one day.
Whenever someone tells me about their stages, I immediately know that they got mad gains from their muffler delete and K&N air filter upgrades.

Wait I didn’t understand something. That chiptuning is also possible on atmospheric engines right? Even if the powergains are less important, we all want more powah. So what exactly is modified in a chiptuning in an atmospheric engine? The throttle body opens even wider? If not, how can the engine inject more fuel to create that tiny extra horsepower? Please petrolfriends, help me understand this
So if you put a turbo on like a car before ecu like a chevelle, would the ecu tuning be the equivalent of carburetor adjusting and spark plug timing?

I’m doing a daily driver build on my Chevy Trax. It has the 1.4L ecotec turbo. The airbox on these (and the Cruze) is designed to move air UP thru the filter. The factory turbo is built in to the exhaust manifold. I replaced the turbo with a OE equivalent with a billet wheel. High density valve cover and intake manifold. Installed higher temp spark plugs and coil pack. Installed larger intercooler, and cold air intake. My next planned mod is exhaust, I’m going to dual pipe if there is room. All that said, what mod should I do next? I don’t want to replace anything inside the engine.
My stage 3 cancer doesn’t feel like a performance upgrade
I would love to learn to tune a car. Literally would be a dream job.
Track racing: proper alignment, play with tire pressure, no oil leaks, rev limiter. All you can do with a production car. Then you step up to a mid engine car… Lotus Elise or build a AC Cobra. Low COG, alignment, tirepressure, rev limiter and then build an engine. Max hp is less important than durability.

Its hard to conceptualize a 2.0L making 500+ hp and 500+ ftlb torque. The Jerwagon is a truly remarkable car and what an incredible tune

But even before that, tuning was even more wild. You know why it’s called tuning? Cus back when they didn’t have computers it was about fiddling around with valves and listening to the wrumm and brrr and tuning the musical instrument.

Stage 1 is literally a remap. Maybe dpf and egr delete. But nothing else fits into stage 1
Heres how I do it Stage 1 is full bolt ons without changing aspiration or fuel so Full exhaust full intake and a flash tune Stage 2 is full bolt with out changing aspiration so fuel upgrade(injectors, fuel pump, and/or e85), clutch, and stand alone ECU Stage 3 is fully built with out aspiration change so full bolt ons fuel upgrade, clutch, stand alone ECU, cam, and forged internals Stage four is fully built with turbo good for up too 500whp Stage 5 is fully built with turbo/turbos good for 1000/1000+ and works the same for already turbos engines now anything that’s already built crazy from factory like a hellcat or a McLaren or a Ferrari or gt350 like those obviously have different stages like Stage 1 is full bolt Stage 2 is fully built Stage 3 is adding 200-300hp Stage 4 is adding 350-500 and Stage 5 is adding 550 to 800 horse
I remember when I started learning about cam upgrades for LS3s I remember reading one site that said a stage 1 cam was generally a +30 hp gain and I installed a stage 1 from TX Speed and it gained me about +90 hp.
In the UK the general understanding is;
*Stage 1* – ECU software *only*
*Stage 2* – ECU + Bolt ons/Induction kit
*Stage 3* – All of the above +Turbo Upgrade/ Supercharger.
*Stage 4* All of the above + Fully built / forged engine
I think cams are part of stage 2 they are cheap and sometime fairly easy to install
