Actually, flat engines and boxer engines are slightly different, in that flat engines have a pair of piston share the same crankpin, meanwhile boxer engines have every pair of pistons use separate crankpins. So a flat engine is basically a 180 degree V engine, while a boxer engine is an engine thats of a slightly different configuration. The difference between the two in terms of how they function is that flat engines function basically like any V engine, when one of the pistons is at its lowest amount of compression, the other cylinder sharing the crankpin will have the air fuel mixture completely compressed. Meanwhile, in a boxer engines, every pair of pistons will always be at the same stage of the 4 stroke cycle. I think the boxer engine is actually better than a flat in terms of performance, mainly in that it is more balanced and has lesser vibrations, therefore increasing balance and its overall lifespan.

  30. IVAN IVONOVICH on February 28, 2022 at 6:03 pm

Take note… Not all V type engines are of a "60 degrees" layout, as stated! A V-6 can be either 60 degrees, 90 degrees, or even 15 degrees. And a V-12 can be either too. Most V-8s are 90 degrees.
All engines are designed to have an even throw/firing between the cylinders (most of the time).
V-6 120 degrees firing angle, (fires every 120 degrees). V-8 90 degrees firing angle, (fires every 90 degrees). Etc.

Gotta love how you say “V engine cylinders are mounted at 60 degrees” then proceed to show models of 90 degree engines.

  43. SirLoseALot on February 28, 2022 at 6:19 pm

There are also 90° and 180° V engines. I also believe that there is a 45° V engine. If you count VR engines, there is also 22,5°. Also, there is a difference between flat and boxer engines.

  44. 黃仕閎 on February 28, 2022 at 6:19 pm

    Where is rotary engine?

  46. Dino Elasz on February 28, 2022 at 6:19 pm

At 4:28 saying "V configurations are found on a wife range of high performance cars" or something to that effect. It shows a GT2 RS which is a boxer 6, not a V6
