How is the trailer doing?
The more I research, the more I am thinking reefer is the way to go. Thanks for the input.
You advices are great but as for me am soo new to driving and i cant tell the difference between the trailers you where talking about it would be much appreciated if as you where explaining you add a clip of the kind of trailer your talking about and point at the main difference between them thanks

Always been a reefer baby.
In 38 years I’ve pulled just about anything you can hook, strap or chain to a truck, doubles, triples, shotgun tanks, compartment tanks, flatbed, RGN, reefer and dry box. I haven’t pulled dumps or pneumatic tanks. Hauling a reefer I made many more multiple pickups than multiple drops, old school refers with the Christmas tree and Mercedes diesels for the reefer unit, nothing like blowing Freon all over your load, as well as the compressor oil. I’m back on dry van for now, still looking at going back to heavy haul, but after two back surgeries and at least one rotator cuff in my future I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it. I figure I’ve got 10 years left in me if I stay with dry box, so one more truck, the one I want, 600 hp, 18 speed, 3.55 rears and a great big sleeper, 80” not the super sleeper. If you’re going to pull reefer you have to get used to the unit cycling, and wake up when it isn’t right, learn what to do with the tattle tales, tossing them in the chute was always fun, or sticking them in the fridge in the cab. Nothing like a partitioned mixer with strawberries on it to make your blood pressure rise. Good advice Brian.

In my experience: flatbedding is good. A rollback curtain is the way to go. Screw throwing tarps. Deliverys are mostly 7 am – 3pm. Very rarely on the weekends.
Dry van is ok. Get used to dealing with paying for Lumpers with company T checks. Guard the lumber receipts with your life, or it comes out of your pay. I gained a lot of weight quickly, because of all the sitting.
Reefer is ok, still have some Lumpers to deal with. A lot of night pick up & deliverys. The docks can be a cluster of trucks getting in and out of the doors.
Box drivers tend to be much better backers than flatbedders. You don’t do a lot of backing in Flatbed. Reefer, they always give you a door between 2 trucks, and lots of yard traffic whizzing back n forth.
Hazmat tanker is best pay. Mostly night work, because it’s easier to get in and out of the gas stations when they are closed. Make sure its pay by the hour & not by the load.
"Staying in some kind of shape that’s not round." 🤣🤣 I am dead with that comment. I haul dry & reefer. Long term, I want to get into tank/hazmat & heavy hauling/specialized.

Over 25 years and Ive tried almost everything. I have to say I Absolutely Love Flat Bed. I own a reefer and a flatbed. When certain produce crops come in and seasonal rates jump i pull the reefer till they fall off. Then im back to my flatbed. The schedule with a reefer will kick your ass for sure. The flatbed schedule and the labor is much more satisfying to me.
Are there trucking gigs out there where you can run exclusively at night?
I’m not a new driver, but I have little open deck experience. I’ve been doing tanker work for years. In your opinion, if I switched to open deck work as an owner operator, would I have any trouble getting loads?

I like tanker
Bulk is a pretty big segment too. Covers most of what everyone else is bringing up. I run bulk most of the time and love the part where I unload myself. Box goes up product comes out. Or in the temporary open back gate and turn on the belt and roll it out. Even my flatbed loads I unload with a moffet. But as far as you big three I liked flatbed the best. Good miles and customers usually want the product right away when you get there so they unload you fast and get you outta there.

I’m considering to apply for Maverick because I heard they have a good training program for flat bed. Any thoughts about it? What others company would it be a great fit to start in open deck trucking?

I would never do flat bed, you lazy. Box is fine. Step deck was nice only drawback was it could get a little tight. I liked refer a lot. Two draw backs, chicken plants reek and when I came home I couldn’t sleep without a lawnmower running outside the window. 🤣😂🤣😂

I got my class a. Whats some trucking industries that pay high
I came over to reefer from flatbed recently. Mainly due to covid and keeping my bank account where I need it. I absolutely miss flatbed. When I come back it will be with my own truck and I can’t wait.
There is no real way to know what you want until you try it. At least that is how it worked for me. Out West is beautiful but at least 5 months of Winter… East, crowded and no parking…Dry Van, less vision, drop and hook, long live loads and unloads, sliding tandems…Tanker, shorter trailers, easier to park and drive, fixed wheels on trailer but multiple tank wash outs… list goes on and on… each has ups and downs. For me, ideal is keeping the same equipment, drop and hook is such a pain when it’s a lottery to see if someone left you a trailer with lights out or a flat tire…, Same equipment and same route or routes, stress levels are much lower when you know your gear and know the route.
I really want to get back into stepdeck I switched to dry van because I was a company driver at a company that treated me like trash so I switched companies and became owner Operater for them. I can do stepdeck through them but there insurance policy won’t be able to cover my stepdeck freight . So I have to find my own insurance policy , and find a stepdeck to lease and use there MC number to get loads.

Flatbed is it for me! Yeah tarping in the wind sucks, tarping in snow/rain sucks, and load shifts REALLY suck(even with proper securement it happens, really rare for me 2x in my whole 3.5yr run so far) but i LOVE doing labor, chaining, strapping, carrying 8ft tarps onto the trailer or to the catwalk to move them out of the way. It keeps you a bit in shape! Ill be buying an all aluminum when im done paying off my steel/wood 48, id love a step but i have a direct customer and they dont load steps, but i think i can live with that for what they pay lol.

I’ve been driving for 21 years, 3 years OTR and 18 years as a company driver. Coming back to the road I don’t clear what I wanted to do. I’m buying a mid roof, I have hazmat. Dry van and reefers have to deal with the dock time and warehouses people, so is out of your control when you are going to get done to take your next load, same as containers dealing with the port terminals. I don’t know much about flats and tankers. Any advice will be welcomed.

What does "deadhead" mean?
