It’s not easy to figure out who is the best car company in the world. But we can rank the top automakers by how many vehicles they sell, how much revenue they bring in, what their net profit is and by how much profit they make on each vehicle they sell.

My favorite attribute of a car company is how well do their vehicles hold up over time. 1. Toyota 2. Honda 3. Subaru. 4. VW group . And another important factor is resale value- 1. Toyota 2. Honda 3. Subaru…
Great breakdown for a stock holder but not for a car owner. Excellent presentation though.

  2. Guenther Michaels on June 6, 2022 at 2:12 pm

You should do a video on Advertising spend by car makers. Tesla spends nothing, plus they have the retail margin because they sell direct to consumers.

  3. Bob Mitchell on June 6, 2022 at 2:13 pm

Toyota sure as hell don’t spend their profits on styling.

  4. Bob Mitchell on June 6, 2022 at 2:15 pm

The Germans make Overated ,Crap cars and Idiots still buy them.

  5. Mike Hayse on June 6, 2022 at 2:16 pm

Funny, I thought this would have more to do with "who makesthe best cars", not "most pfofitably run company". The former is how I pick my car manufacturers, not the latter. Anyone who picks a car bc that company made the most profit should have their overly capitalist head examined.

  6. va da on June 6, 2022 at 2:19 pm

Last category seems useless to compare.. probably ferrari or rolls royce would be top … cant compare as they serve diffent market segments

  7. sqpilot63074 on June 6, 2022 at 2:19 pm

The best car company speaks for itself when you don’t have to visit the dealership….TOYOTA IS KING AND DEAD LAST NISSAN AND TESLA….overpaid CRAP.

  8. Hertzair on June 6, 2022 at 2:19 pm

The two countries that were virtually destroyed during WW2….lead auto production. Why? These are industrious cultures. Everything is about culture, or belief systems.

  9. Eugene Gilleno on June 6, 2022 at 2:22 pm

Toyota doesn’t sell many vehicles here in the UK !……and Renault/Nissan are largely owned by the French government.

  10. Derek Debosz on June 6, 2022 at 2:23 pm

Toyota makes less profit from single car means not cheap parts and no greed. Best reliability.

  11. G Keefer on June 6, 2022 at 2:23 pm

I’m on my 5th 4Runner… I love the brand & every time I’m in the market, they always seem to grab me… I like their recipe, I love their longevity & reliability…

  12. Bob Mitchell on June 6, 2022 at 2:23 pm

That just means that there are 10 and a half million boring people in the world.

  13. Ricky Earp on June 6, 2022 at 2:26 pm

Well, that would be FIAT! They manufacture directly and under license, more cars, trucks and vans than any THREE of the companies in the "tease" COMBINED and that includes two brands of US heavy-duty semi tractors! Yes, FIAT!!! The number one auto maker in Brazil and Mexico and South America and Europe and Africa, and the Mid-East and number three in Asia and number three in North America and number three in Australia! 8 out of ten buses on the Earth are made by a FIAT company-like Scania or ALL the US highway buses! The largest Japanese auto/truck company isn’t even mentioned-Toyo-San! Second is Nissan, Third is Toyota (dia-Ichi Motors), a VERY distant fifth is Honda. Toyo-San sells more cars/trucks/ land movers than all other Japanese cos combined but they DON’T sell in the US at all since 2012!!! Not even HD Trucks and have NEVER sold an automobile here but the Emperor of Japan rides in a Toyo-San Limo and has for 104 years!

    Very interesting article

  15. brandon murphy on June 6, 2022 at 2:32 pm

    Honda builds the best engines

  16. VIC Petrishak on June 6, 2022 at 2:34 pm

This sounds like a J.D.Power commercial . Pick and choose your questions and answers to fit your customer ratings .German vehicles are over rated .They are also over engineered . The Germans are capable of over engineering a wooden tooth pick .

  17. John Cornillie on June 6, 2022 at 2:36 pm

Like that you are looking at balance sheets and income statements. I second the request for you to look at debt on the balance sheets. Would be interesting to see which OEMs have the cash to invest in the future.

  18. sqpilot63074 on June 6, 2022 at 2:37 pm

Profit per unit = STUPID BUYERS PAYING ASS LOAD OF MONEY FOR CRAPPY CARS. TESLA. NO QUALITY AND P.O.S.

  19. Andrew Smith on June 6, 2022 at 2:37 pm

if you’re going to include Ducati motorcycles for the Volkswagen group, then why not add Honda motorcycles. That would move Honda to the top of the sales list.

  20. cartmann227 on June 6, 2022 at 2:38 pm

    Tesla: overpriced junk. Thank you!

  21. D.E.B. B on June 6, 2022 at 2:39 pm

I would counter, that the ‘best’ car company is the one that makes the best cars, not the one that generates the most profit. Tesla, for example, could have pioneered a replaceable battery system, but instead is plowing ahead with it’s own proprietary system to get rich instead. That’s not a ‘good car company’. it’s a profit machine, and screw the best interests of the people of the world. A replaceable battery pack which could be slid under the car and attach with say, bayonet connectors and then latched in place with some sort of lock, could be exchanged in a couple of minutes, the same way it only takes that long to fill a gas tank. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, we have to have ‘charging stations’ and sit idly while the proprietary electric systems need to recharge.

  22. vrjersey on June 6, 2022 at 2:39 pm

If traditional auto makers got rid of the stealership model they would have much higher margins closer or above Tesla. It would be a big plus for them and the consumer. They could drop prices by $2000 which would increase demand and pocket 2-3k which improves profit.

  23. tom king on June 6, 2022 at 2:41 pm

Perhaps next time you could include quality. Thanks

  24. Stephen Marcus on June 6, 2022 at 2:43 pm

Once GM looses China to sanctions and can only produce truck-based vehicles due to chip crisis they will be super profitable, high margins, but that’s it

  25. scooby34 on June 6, 2022 at 2:43 pm

great video! that last ranking was especially revealing. most profit per car essentially equal to being ripped off the most. never buy the cheapest thing or the most expensive. always pick somewhere in the middle. I bet Hyundai’s margins are low because of the mountain of money they are paying JD powers, etc.

  26. va da on June 6, 2022 at 2:43 pm

How about most reliable cars easy and cheap to repair…

  27. Bob Mitchell on June 6, 2022 at 2:46 pm

Well that is total bollocks because you didn’t even mention that SAIC makes over 6 Million vehicles a year.

  28. Slide Rule on June 6, 2022 at 2:46 pm

What about quality and reliability? Much mor3 important to buyers.

  29. דן שלמה on June 6, 2022 at 2:49 pm

I don’t care who make more money, I care about who’s the best company for the customers, according to what I see Hyundai is the best company for the customers…. 😀

  30. Rudy Romo on June 6, 2022 at 2:49 pm

The Best is Tesla…and the one with the brightest future. Bar NONE!

  31. John Savage on June 6, 2022 at 2:50 pm

    There isn’t one!

  32. Carlos Alen duran on June 6, 2022 at 2:52 pm

    Honda

  33. David D on June 6, 2022 at 2:53 pm

We want to know who makes the Best quality car/vehicle??

  34. Bryan Mitchell on June 6, 2022 at 2:54 pm

Hard to believe GM, volts wagon, Nissan are still in business.

Best vehicle in the world is the — no pymt

  36. Dennis Clark on June 6, 2022 at 2:55 pm

Great show John!! A real overall look at the car business.

  37. vill you on June 6, 2022 at 2:56 pm

Thank you. Great synopsis. I had no idea how little manufacturers actually made. Shocking actually.

  38. Daniella Corinne on June 6, 2022 at 2:57 pm

You missed an obviously one – Suzuki. Looking at Suzuki press releases, they made 2.8 million cars in 2021, and sold over 2.75 million cars, ahead of BMW and Mercedes.

  39. Snuffy Smith on June 6, 2022 at 3:00 pm

    Nice video, thanks.

  40. Guenther Michaels on June 6, 2022 at 3:00 pm

What did you use for profit? ( EBITDA ) VW, Mercedes have massive long term debt, payments are included in Financials.

  41. Patrick Williams on June 6, 2022 at 3:02 pm

John missed the point. You can slap a badge on a "luxury vehicle" and charge more and give the customer less. From 2017 for example Toyota have been including on all "Safety Sense" on it’s base cars. To this day you have to pay extra for similar features on some luxury cars. The present Toyota Venza is better build quality than a lot luxury vehicles. Call that the GLB hybrid and you charge another 5000 for it easily.

  42. Anthony Walker on June 6, 2022 at 3:03 pm

Any rental car company, because you don’t have to own the problem, just rent it.

  43. jim britton on June 6, 2022 at 3:03 pm

high profits are not the best they ripoff the consumer the most

  44. Copisetic 1 on June 6, 2022 at 3:03 pm

Toyota quality beats the crap out of all the rest.

  45. chimbatete on June 6, 2022 at 3:04 pm

I was thinking hard of buying Tesla stocks these last couple of weeks. I think I’ll wait for another dip and get in.

  46. Glenn Cooper on June 6, 2022 at 3:06 pm

    This was great – thanks!

  47. satoruchibana on June 6, 2022 at 3:06 pm

    $5k car where can I get one…

  48. Hertzair on June 6, 2022 at 3:07 pm

Porsche used to be the most profit per vehicle

  49. Basil Fawlty lll on June 6, 2022 at 3:09 pm

How about the most important factors for consumers, quality and reliability?

  50. George Szilva on June 6, 2022 at 3:10 pm

Toyota is methodical and slow rolling in a very good way.Notice that Toyota is reluctant to jump on the EV bandwagon in a big way…..hydrogen cars coming!!
