I’ve been doing this exact calculation for years. Cost of ownership per mile/ km is the only working comparison to factor in owners variables.

Missing 1 type, for those who have it, the Hydrogen’s.

I am presently driving a rented Tesla 3/Y for Uber in Kansas City. I have to charge that POS twice a day which costs me $50 in time. The self driving feature, and ridiculous doors, are quite weird. I’m spending more money operating this Tesla than my old car (it’s in the shop now getting restored).

  4. Adam Rosenberg on December 20, 2022 at 1:40 am

You forgot about the cost of maintenance for each vehicle.

  5. Joop Roos on December 20, 2022 at 1:41 am

Driving a electric car is the same as driving a batterie car!And batteries dont last long, even if they are the best of the best.Every time you give it the load, less charge comes out because off battery degradation! That is not the same as warning out off a petrol motor.Batteries dont last that long. And that i found missing in the equitation!

Scotty what about the road use tax ev owners will to pay the state of Virginia already charges a road use tax for ev owners at tag renewal time the loss of the gas tax will have to come from somewhere that’s how they pay for roads and you can rest assured taxes are going to added in the future

A lot of states are already charging an annual EV road tax of something like $50 -$100 to cover the lost gas tax. You also just might be cold in your EV during the winter if you live in a cold climate.

  9. sourav jaiswal on December 20, 2022 at 1:45 am

Its not the CO2 emissions, its the SOx and NOx. Powerplants have more space and capital to install filters compared to a billion individual exhaust.

  10. Wallace Walcher on December 20, 2022 at 1:45 am

Adding in FSD for the Tesla totally went against your apples versus oranges statement earlier in the video. Sad that you couldn’t be neutral.

  11. Little Reptilian on December 20, 2022 at 1:47 am

When you compare it with a Diesel, the Diesel will need the half of the fuel cost.

  12. Gregory Fairchild on December 20, 2022 at 1:48 am

Scotty, gas cars aren’t at their most efficient either the Fiat & GM & others are shrinking their engines sizes but adding turbochargers and actually increasing power output.
I can see a sub 2.0 liter getting over 50mpg soon while maintaining power levels.
Ofcourse we are always going to need big engine torquey trucks, tractors, shops & planes, generators etc.
So even if we convert 100% to Electric Cars it wouldn’t reduce reduce emissions or fossil fuel usage very much.
This EV topia is a fantasy.
It will become a niche market as it should.

  13. Mike Lembke on December 20, 2022 at 1:50 am

I have done my research and have always said EV vehicles are more costly than a gas vehicle ,experts keep proving this

  14. Mark Justice on December 20, 2022 at 1:52 am

Sorry, you must consider temp and driving speed to make the comparisons real.

  15. Kirk Martin on December 20, 2022 at 1:52 am

This is an extremely flawed comparison. You didn’t factor in resale value (in the other words, the depreciation cost), insurance, or maintenance. You also seem to cherry-pick one of the more expensive EV options, and then compared it to much less expensive gas and hybrid vehicles. If you’re going to choose a RAV4 as your gas option, why not compare it to the best-selling EV in the country – the Model 3. And the last numbers I saw, out of 1.5 million cars sold, about 100,000 were sold with full self-driving. Adding that skews your numbers. And for a state, you picked the third most expensive electricity market in the country for your example. Then, you didn’t use the gas prices in New York (which are also high), but used the nationwide average. It seems like you’d made a conclusion that EV’s aren’t less expensive, then looked for data that supported that conclusion.

I think a more fair comparison would be to pick vehicles more similar, include the ancillary costs you left out, and equalize the electricity and gas prices to one locale. A good comparison state is probably California, since that state accounts for about 40% of EV sales nationwide.

Maybe compare a Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf to a comparable gas model, like a Toyota Corolla, which also has a hybrid model. I think that would be a more applicable comparison. I think an EV likely comes out cheaper the more you drive, but I’d be interested to see an unbiased analysis.

Lastly, Tesla and Nissan have both been selling EV’s in decent volume since 2012. The early batteries are down about 30% in capacity over that time (and they also had pretty short ranges), but that’s over ten years. So, if you bought a 2011 Nissan Leaf, your range shrank from about 100 miles to about 70 miles. The average daily commute in the US is 41 miles round-trip. EV’s certainly aren’t perfect, but I think we can put to bed the idea that you’ll be replacing batteries every 5-8 years, or even 10 years. There’s no data to support that.

I’d be much more inclined to watch a more even-handed rundown of the positives and negatives.

  16. Will How on December 20, 2022 at 1:52 am

So, the conclusion is, ALL cars are overpriced utilities, and the car industry is like a legalized cartel..

Nothing is permanent… Even plant earth.

  18. Adrians Daily Thoughts on December 20, 2022 at 1:54 am

Love this video. Then if you really want to pretend to be green figure in the planet cost of creating the battery in the first place (miming of rare earth minerals) and then there is no way to recycle it at the end of life. Actually it’s very dirty to the planet. I wish people would follow the facts and not the politics. This was a great video. Thanks

  19. Agentcapture on December 20, 2022 at 1:55 am

NG powered hybrids are where it’s at. Especially since we the U.S. are the number one producer of NG, and natural gas is half as pollutant as gasoline. I have to really wonder why they don’t develop an engine like this.

  20. Gaebe on December 20, 2022 at 1:56 am

Yeah! Customers will always pay more no matter what. Humanity is the specie that is born to pollute at faster rate and do not care. We are blind fools!

I can buy 3 Priuses for the price of one Tesla and it’s cheaper to drive per mile. Hybrid wins.

  32. Wild Tex on December 20, 2022 at 2:16 am

I live in Texas so that means I live in my car flying down the road. I keep my fuel cars for an average of 20 years and have had no issues. I don’t need a faulty apple car that locks me in and then catches fire.

  33. Kenneth Jacobs on December 20, 2022 at 2:19 am

Taking this video a little further, I wonder who is going to buy an eight year old EV ? There are no guaranties that the batteries will be any good by that time, so they will have to be replaced. How much is that going to cost? Where are all of the spent batteries going to be disposed of? I’m all for electric cars, but they are pushing a product that hasn’t been thought out towards the future. Nothing that politicians think or try to create ever works out well. They just spend our tax dollars on a wim, and have no business getting into the corporations that are building these cars. Anyone with common sense knows that we have serious problems with the nations grid system. That is the foundation in which all of this works. How about we start with that ?

  34. Ƥitcђ Shifter on December 20, 2022 at 2:19 am

Total electric car are NOT green, they rely on electricity which is created by fossil fuels.

  35. Carl Smith on December 20, 2022 at 2:20 am

Forget all that. I rather drive to the station and grab a bullet train or a maglev super train. But american ignorance keeps the United States from advancing to these modern marvels of transportation. California, hats off to you for making the effort. Electric cars are nice but not the solution. 80 thousand dollars for an electric car? Lol!!! I have a Buick Lacrosse and a Nissan pathfinder rock creek and both of them are clean, polished and detailed and most of all, they are paid off. I take care of them to keep them for as long as i can before getting back in to the extra cost of car payments. When the time comes for car payments, it definitely will not be some eighty thousand dollar electric car.

  36. Andy Van Herwynen on December 20, 2022 at 2:20 am

Not likely any Tesla owners will keep their EV up to 12 years, because at 14,000 mile per year means a Tesla EV would be at 168,000 miles. That is FAR beyond the period of just 70,000 to replace the battery pack under warranty. Currently a replacement battery pack is in the $20,000 range. Doubt many Tesla owners will spend that kind of maintenance dollars. That means, like said on the video, the Tesla owners will likely just roll their costs over into a new Tesla, at whatever price that will be. Certainly a high miles Tesla will have next to no used vehicle market value with a $20,000 battery replacement hanging over it.

  37. therealting on December 20, 2022 at 2:21 am

Also do the calculation with the existing older car you have, which already exists and won’t consume tons of resources to replace. The most cost effective and environmentally friendly option is to continue using an older, fuel efficient car.

  38. Nara Santitissadeekorn on December 20, 2022 at 2:21 am

If they want everyone to drive EV, they must make it very affordable to everyone. Tesla might be "Apple" of the EV world, selling at the premium price. But the average of EV price will have to come way more down in the near future. In the next 5-6 years, the price should come down very close to the combustion-engine car or hybrid car (and the battery range and charging time will be much more practical). I guess buying EV right now is certainly a stupid thing to do. Just wait! And if that does not happen, why trying to force EV into the market in the first place?

  39. Matthew Elberson on December 20, 2022 at 2:22 am

Electric cars are terrible for the environment. What happens when the batteries die? What about the extraction of rare earth elements to make the batteries? The fact that they seem to go up in flames more often and are extremely difficult to put out? Saving the earth at what cost?

  40. Doc Holliday on December 20, 2022 at 2:22 am

Guarantee you that gas prices are going to go back up, big time, especially diesel.

  41. Bruno Ferreira on December 20, 2022 at 2:22 am

I wonder about those 12 years an average american keeps a car. If a tesla (or other EV for that matter) keeps an EV for 12 years, I wonder what its range is compared to new, I wonder if the batteries have to be changed by then and what the price would be (even if they are available for that model after 12 years). Also, if those things happen, I figure that a 12 year old EV would see its value go down immensely, so all that math would favor even more the ICE cars (even more than hybrids sine they too have batteries and ones that might even last fewer years than those from EV’s, although cheaper ones to exchange).

  42. Spencer Lucas on December 20, 2022 at 2:25 am

if you like electric cars good, its not for me. range anxiety will be big deal for me even tho the uk has an ok amount of charging points i travel 50ml per day round trip 6 on 3 off so over 900mls per mnth. in electric car id be charging it up just about every other day and zero charge point at work.
my 1.2ltr 4 cylinder on a full tank driven sensibly can achieve more miles per tank then most electrics do per full charge and the range stats are greater then real world range stats for electric cars ok its same as petrol diesel cars but im sure no where near as bad as electric cars. a ytbr i watched did not find a fast charger and took 1hr 9 mins to full charge his electric MG suv i never as you all know fill up a petrol or diesel in 1hr 9min, im happy ish paying fuel prices at the mo to get more miles out of my tank and the speedy fill ups at the fuel stations plus zero range anxiety.

  43. wh44 on December 20, 2022 at 2:26 am

There is no mention of the most popular EV in Europe: the Renault Zoe. It costs a fraction of the Tesla.
By my calculations, my total cost of ownership here in Germany will be less than for an ICE car.
I would be very interested in seeing the calculation redone for the US.
Note that the range is only about 200 miles, but we have a very good charging network, so being stranded is not a worry here.

  44. David Beaufeaux on December 20, 2022 at 2:26 am

you’re not factoring in the other charges of the gas powered such as oil changes

  45. daskippa lawson on December 20, 2022 at 2:27 am

Climate change is a big scam.

  46. michael hammerberg on December 20, 2022 at 2:28 am

  47. Therizino Saurus on December 20, 2022 at 2:30 am

this is part of the reason i believe that hybrid is the future and not full electric

  48. G V on December 20, 2022 at 2:30 am

Electricity will go way up once most people are driving electric cars will cost the same or more if he included a 30 to 40 thousand dollar electric car the ranger would be know where near the tesla

  49. Hudson B on December 20, 2022 at 2:31 am

    Garbage comparison

  50. Fred Johnson on December 20, 2022 at 2:31 am

I will never buy those cars because of the danger of catching on fire, don’t drive through flooded salty water.
