Myth Busting! Can You Restore a Dead Car Battery With Welder? Let's Settle This!

Myth Busting! Can You Restore a Dead Car Battery With Welder? Let's Settle This!

Let’s try to restore 5 different car batteries using 3 different procedures to see if any of them work. We’ll first use a DC-powered ARC welder to apply a lot of current at once. Then we’ll try using Epsom salt to restore a different battery. Finally, we’ll see if an electronic desulfator can improve the performance of a faulty battery.

I saw sweet projects video they used 200 amps

  2. @jimsix9929 on April 7, 2024 at 4:22 pm

so glad you did this batteries are not cheap anymore, I have a 6 year old deka battery that I am going to try, it was getting tired but still worked with a full charge, I do have a big charger with 200 amp engine start, there is another video on u tube he left it on for 20 minutes then let it cool for 20 minutes and repeated 8 times, wish me luck

  3. @kenshea5794 on April 7, 2024 at 4:22 pm

That was very comprehensive, well done.
Have you ever tried charging them backwards to pos ground after fully discharging ?

  4. @Flapswgm on April 7, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Great job. Never thought of using a welder. LOL

  5. @bear4759 on April 7, 2024 at 4:26 pm

You have to be careful of the fumes while you charge the battery as it is highly combustible
And when a battery explodes, it makes a hell of a noise and sulphuric acid is thrown everywhere
If you get it on your clothes, it will eat through it! It will also eat your cars paint
SO not smoking or sparks while you charge your battery. Be careful taking the leads off, turn off the power 1st, or 💥

I tried restoring my truck battery with an arc welded 140 amp that is supposed to work with regular 110 amp outlet, but when I hooked it up to the battery at it’s lowest settings which was 30 amp it would tripped my 20 amp breakers, I noticed that as soon as I turned on the welder it would start bubbling all the cells, not sure if it was normal

  8. @intoxicated_engineering on April 7, 2024 at 4:29 pm

Does “ cycling “ a battery mean you put it on a welder then discharged it for one cycle. Or was the battery not discharged and left to cook only ?

  9. @alexgrishuk2759 on April 7, 2024 at 4:30 pm

Restored battery will work for 2-3 months. And will die again. It does not make sence to waste time for this.

By replacing the fluid with salt it meant that you replaced an electrolyte with non-electrolytic chemical

Why the hell do you have to shout everything?

  13. @robhow6105 on April 7, 2024 at 4:39 pm

Does that welder have some kind of remote to turn it on or as soon as u turn on the welder it just starts cranking?

  14. @garybrown9719 on April 7, 2024 at 4:40 pm

You should have done 3 batteries with epsen salts the 2 I did both of them Worked😮

Amazing video. I would like to know so much more about this stuff

  16. @smegheadGOAT on April 7, 2024 at 4:40 pm

you should reverse the polarity and then some high current and then charge it still reversed and use it reversed

A little late to the game here, but great video… I’ve never tried the welder trick but I have tried the de-sulfate and and epsom salt fixes… As an EE by education and profession I did not have much faith they would work… but, being curious, I figured I had nothing to lose. As much as I tried, the de-sulfators did nothing (tried two different units)… and on two batteries it actually made them worse (internal resistance went up). I did get dead cells to produce voltage with the epsom salt solution, but they had little Ah capacity, rendering the battery useless. I laughed at the welder process… reminded me of the old days of batting a TV on the side to get the channel to come in… percussion maintenance. Fun stuff.

  23. @justinirwin7881 on April 7, 2024 at 4:48 pm

The epsom salt does work if you do it right.. I have done it multiple times and worked perfectly

  24. @josephkrcmaric5964 on April 7, 2024 at 4:51 pm

I pried open my sealed 5 yr old EverStart battery and found it was dry. I added a quart of distilled water to reach the bottom of the rings, but it was too far gone with an old style charger and high current. The outer cells bubbled, but the inners didn’t. I don’t think I will get another sealed one.

  25. @gregoryswelding on April 7, 2024 at 4:51 pm

Looks like I gotta try this on my truck’s battery. It never has enough cranking amps to start it

I see you have what appears to be the older style battery tender/maintainer that they use to sell at harbor freight and maybe other places. These were great, I had one for years and it somehow got lost or taken. These were great because the wires were heavy-duty, almost like the wiring used on an appliance in your home, not like the new style tenders that have ridiculously thin (like 20 gauge) wiring. Ths newer ones also have shorter wires, and the annoying springy coil that has to be pulled to stretch out. I do own several of the new style as well because I have several battries that I maintain throughout the year, and they have a cheap tiny plastic housing (which can break far easier) with wire leads that you need to be careful with, if you snag something while carrying it, they are likely to just break. In addition to how cheap the leads and housing is, the alligator clips are also far cheesier, smaller, and thinner metal than they use to be too. If you can find the bigger heavier older style like you see here (5 plugged in to the power strip), I suggest buying those instead of the smaller flimsy cheap one’s. I understand they produced them like this to keep costs down and make them more affordable, but if they break while being stored, carried, dropped or pulled out of a drawer, its not worth it. The old style was less than $30 and even came with different style leads for clipping on, or semi permanent connections with terminals. So $30 compared to $9, yes a third of the price but not if they keep breaking and need to be replaced or repaired.

  28. @markkuvuori4300 on April 7, 2024 at 4:56 pm

Next step is to test if those repaired batteries work in cold…At -30º C you hope your battery is good..

  29. @michaeltopping8227 on April 7, 2024 at 4:57 pm

ive watched a few of this type of video, eveyone talks about the amps used yet no one mentions the voltage applied to these batteries
of welders i have tested they are way over 12v output

  33. @rocketsurgeon11 on April 7, 2024 at 5:00 pm

The crazy guys over at Garage54 did a battery revival test where they reversed the polarity of the battery and it worked really well. I am skeptical on it and it seems kind of dangerous, but it would be interesting to see if you could get that method to work as well.

  34. @meisievannancy on April 7, 2024 at 5:02 pm

A dead shorted cell is the one you need to cover.

  44. @fubarsnafu4994 on April 7, 2024 at 5:16 pm

Epsom salt I thought was used to boil over not a replacement for the catalyst? You just use that solution to boil the cells over then you flush and replace with fresh acid/water mix. Sulfuric acid and epsom salts are completely different H2SO4 Sulfuric acid and MgSO4 7H2O Epsom salts. hydrogen vs magnesium.. Dunno what kind of battery that makes but from your experiment didn’t look so hot. My buddy’s dad boils over with that solution, flush and replaces and I can’t wait to see him Monday to speak with him. ✌

  45. @Niku225 on April 7, 2024 at 5:17 pm

The biggest enemy for car batteries is not using the car…so battery is staying and the acid also is staying and this is the time when the battery is getting sulfated, if the car is using at least 1 or 2 times per month for at least 1 hour is good cuz the liquid in battery is moving inside the plates of the cells getting rid of sulfate, so the more car is running the more battery is staying healthy and even if is not running at least is better to let the motor running for one hour and the acid is moving in battery cuz of vibration of motor

  46. @C0wboycadillac on April 7, 2024 at 5:17 pm

Should have hit the other batteries with more power from the welder. My dad showed me that many years ago and we ran our old farm tractor on a 20 year old autocraft battery way past its prime by changing the distilled water and hitting it with the bigger of our four welders

  49. @shawntilton9170 on April 7, 2024 at 5:20 pm

I don’t understand why people are doing it wrong with the Epsom salt.

    1. Empty acid. Don’t throw away, as it can be reused.
    2. Fill with salt mixture.
    3. Run the 5x high voltage cycles.
    4. Empty salt mixture, and flush with tap water until clear, and one last flush with distilled water to flush tap.
    5. Refill with acid. Making sure its where it should be with bulb tester.
    6. Recharge battery.

If you want to use the welder to charge, it’s much more recommended. Also the salt mixture "is only" for breaking down the lead sulfate from the lead plates.

If the acid is black from the lead, when you dump it out, allow it to sit, and the heavier lead particals will drop to the bottom.
Try not to dump the dark stuff back into the battery.

The lead sulfate floating, causes resistance, which is why you can have a battery, which shows full charge, but has low cranking amps.

You must clean the plates, and get rid of the sulfates. Otherwise your defeating the purpose.

And the reason why the welder charging works so well, is because it cleans the lead plates, and you allowed the particulates to precipitate out and to the bottom.
But you defeat the purpose, by leaving it in, because it will get stirred up when driving around, or just moving it around.

This would be acceptable, for say, deep cycle batteries in a stationary place, where the lead sulfate isn’t getting mixed up in the acid.

Please try again. But use my proven method.
There is another Youtuber that used my method, and was able to successfully renew every single battery he has had brought in to him.

I have brought back VERY DEAD batteries to life, with my method.
Please make a video using my method. So many Youtubers have done it wrong, that its difficult to find the only one, that I found, who did it right.

FYI. You cannot replace battery acid with Epsom salt mixture, and expect it to hold a charge. As there is a reason, why every single battery company uses battery acid, and acid gel.

The problem with the gel, is that you can’t fix it like you can with a liquid acid and distilled water mixture.

It really is very simple everyone. Basic chemistry.
Try making your own battery, and you’ll understand why I use my method.
