Made in Germany | The Auto Industry The Motor of the German Economy is Sputtering

Germany’s car industry is in crisis: in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen has let temp workers go; BMW has halted production lines in Munich; Daimler in Stuttgart is forcing its staff to take a vacation, and in Rüsselsheim Opel has asked Chancellor Angela Merkel for financial assistance.
Calls for government aid to help automakers develop more fuel-efficient cars are growing. At the moment, most auto industry executives aren’t even willing to wager a guess what the year 2009 will bring. But Made in Germany’s intrepid Carmen Meyer travelled to southern Germany, the home of Daimler and Porsche, and visited an automotive supplier there. She was also on hand for a speech about the future of the automotive industry by Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche.

It is cheaper to produce them and then ship them to the US and south America but they are still made using German engineering.
