As a trucker, you have the option of choosing which type of work you’d like to do; local, dedicated runs, regional or long-haul OTR work. Here in this video, we outline the pros and cons of each decision and help you find the type of work that’s most suitable for you.

Local work typically involves driving in the city, dedicated runs are when you serve a single customer repeatedly, regional runs are around 500-mile trips, long-haul runs are around 1000 mile trips.

Brian covers the pros and cons of each option, and explains the differences in home time, workload, pay, lifestyle and much more!

I started off local hualing logs and did that for a few years with overtime and weekends off. then I went to OTR for 6 months and that was enough for me. I’d call up a friend who’s going bass fishing after work and I’m sitting at a TA in cousin fuck Alabama. Had to go back to locall, Missed my weekends.

  13. Kathonic on May 26, 2023 at 11:17 pm

I miss this job, but I felt mocked no matter what I did, I work Regional and OTR, eventually settling into working a dedicated route for Boar’s Head into Brooklyn, it didn’t seem to matter where I went, I was either getting talked down to for being a corporate Knight/Swift subsidiary, or told I was dumb for working in the northeast, you just can’t win.

  14. Robert Wheatley on May 26, 2023 at 11:18 pm

Do you hire us drivers and do they have to go into Canada?

  15. Kyle on May 26, 2023 at 11:18 pm

How about paying the OTR drivers alot better. Not fair that local can make high 20 something an hour, even in the dock. I did OTR for 2 and 1/2 years. The pay SUCKS for the time spent on the road and away from family. I make as much as local driver as a maintenance man for a local e-commerce warehouse. 4, 10 hour shifts mon-thurs. Off Fri, sat, sun. Bet no trucking company could match that

  16. Charles Spencee on May 26, 2023 at 11:19 pm

If anyone knows a really small trucking company that’s hiring message me please. Only have 2 tickets,no DUI,no failed drug test never, 5 years exp, hauled dry van, reefer, stepdeck, flatbed, bulk tankers, logging trailers, containers before. Mainly reefer an dry van. I need to get back into trucking. Any help would be appreciated

I wanna be a OTR. Great video! Thx!

  19. 1BEAVIS13 on May 26, 2023 at 11:19 pm

Local is better with a LTL carrier,. I make over $33 per hour with OT after 8/40. OTR is just a sweatshop on wheels.

  20. Wendy Laguna on May 26, 2023 at 11:22 pm

Put a restroom In the truck

  21. ed Maison on May 26, 2023 at 11:24 pm

New drivers going straight to the city is a recipe for disaster. I can’t understand why you would recommend that kind of driving to a beginner… The most likely outcome is several accidents That will cost them their job and make it near impossible to find a new one.

  22. Lanigame on May 26, 2023 at 11:25 pm

How much time off does an otr driver get when he’s completed a trip?

  23. mack Dog on May 26, 2023 at 11:25 pm

I’m in a dedicated fleet, and I always haul one company’s product outbound. That’s true enough. But we have a large number of routes to choose from. Starting out from our base in Boise, I’ve been to the Canadian border to the Mexican border and from the coast to as far east as Nebraska. In the winter I prefer Oregon and Washington runs and in good weather, Denver and Phoenix. I guess it all depends on who you work for. LoL I avoid California at all costs, let the guys who live there go there, I did my time.

  24. Óðinn's Heathen on May 26, 2023 at 11:25 pm

I’m starting my first job the 24th. A around here without experience is next to impossible. I’m going “regional “ with Decker and although I’ll be home one a week I think their regional is long haul because they’re talking from IA to PA, MI, CT, OH, TN, TX, etc.

  25. sneak apeak on May 26, 2023 at 11:27 pm

    No local for me

  26. Raymond monchi on May 26, 2023 at 11:27 pm

Ilove it. This video is definitely 10/10 for sure!

I appreciate the love and the initiative that he imputes in the video as well.

This video should be at every academy school of trucking for sure!!!

  27. NetAndYahoo on May 26, 2023 at 11:28 pm

It seems like local jobs all want experience and the Megas that hire newbies only want to put you OTR. It doesn’t seem like most new drivers will be able to follow this advice. I’m not saying it’s wrong, it just seems unrealistic for most

  28. Johan Oosthuizen on May 26, 2023 at 11:29 pm

Is it better to have a trailer that is permanent or better to bobtail and use a different trailer from the client. Example. Bobtail to despatch hook up a trailer from the client, drive to example Salt Lake city, unhook, hook another one. (South African trucking is more dedicated)

  29. Advantageous Mutation on May 26, 2023 at 11:30 pm

ups regional is 30$ an hour to start in MN

  30. Ahighslut on May 26, 2023 at 11:32 pm

I got in with UPS. started off local either doing city runs or going 4-5 hours out and coming back same day. and after a year I started covering OTR routes which is way easier and more money. and routes can be anywhere from 3500k miles to 6200k miles. but it’s team driving.

  31. Colin Adventures on May 26, 2023 at 11:33 pm

The local companies in my area pay $27/hr to start and pay goes up into the mid $30/hr range. I live in a high cost of living area though. I actually planned on doing LTL like that but decided to go OTR because it gives me way more options on where I can live. The pay isn’t quite as good but if I can live in an area with 50% lower cost of living, I’m still coming out way ahead.

  32. Cathy Ling on May 26, 2023 at 11:33 pm

what happens if you have a family emergency when you’re a long haul or regional driver?

  33. Horacio Rodriguez on May 26, 2023 at 11:35 pm

You can do local and earn a percentage just become an owner operator

  34. Michael zma on May 26, 2023 at 11:36 pm

    Excellent information

  35. Stihlsawrepairs on May 26, 2023 at 11:37 pm

PARAMOUNT to consider for local CDL routes: you will work yourself to death AND with companies like Sysco and US Foods and McLane, you’ll be offloading 20k pounds each 12 hour shift with a HANDTRUCK that’s taller than you are up and down that trailer ramp in all kinds of lousy weather.
It’s a young man’s game with local route. You’ll load and unload every single shift.

As a "local" driver I work 60 hours a week. And they’d require more if not for the union contract and DOT laws.

  41. mcewen19 on May 26, 2023 at 11:50 pm

I got a local haul job and it’s in ottawa I have to move there it’s my first driver job and it pays 31.28$ I’m pre excited for it

  42. Stephen Ng on May 26, 2023 at 11:53 pm

OTR and regional will probably go with auto drive cabs with a driver/technician in a few years. Just watch.

  43. f+ck youtube on May 26, 2023 at 11:55 pm

I work otr with my pops and we go 2 weeks out 4-5 days in. It works out to about 3 weeks out 1 week in a month. Plenty of time out, we tried a 3 week once and that seemed to go on forever.

  44. Marky Mark on May 26, 2023 at 11:55 pm

Great breakdown of different hauling type video.I want to drive southeast and maybe out to texas, arizona up to Wichita kansas, omaha Nebraska..but no northeast, no Chicago, no Philadelphia, no Boston. I’m in Jacksonville, Florida..what would best be for me..I enjoy non big cities. I prefer seeing them beautiful country nature scenic roads.
