The more you advise people to buy Toyota’s and the more people buy them, shops will learn how to rip off people WITH Toyota’s.

Never trust a dealership. They are rats! They told me it would cost 1500 to change my audi thermostat. I said no. Went to a local guy and paid 500.

  10. How on April 5, 2022 at 5:49 am

We had to pay nearly 2k for front shocks and rear motor mount
We werent down for that so we did it ourselves
It took us a month but we found a few issues and had to change the whole suspension, they wouldve found it and charged us like 7k for all we knee

  11. Isaac on April 5, 2022 at 5:53 am

There is no way NTB charged $1,890 for tires. There is no new tire fee and no disposal fee listed on that invoice. 😆

i went to one place to ask them how much it would be to ut 1 bolt in. and they wanted to take apart my whole engine. my wife ended up being able to put the bolt in herself because her hands are so small.. 🙂

A WORD OF CAUTION: Scotty, a few years ago my local Firestone Tire Center on Hylan Blvd. in the New Dorp section of Staten Island ripped me off when I bought new tires for my Honda Civic. The salesman asked me if I wanted to buy a road hazard warranty for $100..00, saying Firestone would pay for any flat needed to be fixed or even for a new tire of any of the tires I got from them suffered damage and were beyond repair. Believe me, they are not in the business of giving away new tires, nor fixing flat tires for free.

I paid the salesman the $100.00 fee in addition to the cost of four new tires. When I asked him for a receipt for the road hazard warranty, he said I did not need a paper receipt as he would log the warranty information into Firestone’s computer database. Don’t anyone ever fall for this line of crap like I did. What this bastard did was take the $100.00 in cash I gave him and without my realizing it, stuffed it into his pocket.

Because a week later I had a flat tire and brought it to the same Firestone dealer and when another salesman checked their computers, he said they had no record of my ever paying for a road hazard warranty. He said I had no proof, no receipt to show him. When I told him the first salesman told me I did not need a paper receipt, he said they don’t do business like that. The store manager refused to help me as well. I had to hound and hound the corporate office of Firestone somewhere in the Midwest (I think St. Louis?) by phone for a month before I finally got my money back. I must have called them two dozen times.

I suspect this was a practice of that particular store where I got the tires but it may be widespread in other Firestone stores as well. Always pay with either a check or debit or credit card. Don’t give these bastards cash and always, always get a paper receipt up front before they touch your car because they always want to be paid upfront.

Another scam Firestone pulls on their customers is a warranty for free lifetime wheel alignments as long as you own your vehicle. If you get an alignment at Firestone, they will try to sell you this warranty for about $75.00, maybe $100.00.

Again, you must get a paper receipt and also have it in writing from them that they will give you free alignments even if your vehicle went over a pothole and needed an alignment as a result because Firestone will look to get out of doing free wheel alignments to the point where you’ve given them that extra money for nothing. It is a service scam.

Besides, if you have a car for ten years, how many wheel alignments will you require any way? One or two? Better to pay as you need them. Firestone stores should display a huge pair of binoculars on their front window sign because they see you coming. Buyer beware.

  16. TheDigitaldoug on April 5, 2022 at 5:58 am

NTB is horrid. Last time I got tires there, they told me my battery was bad so I bought a new one..lasted 2 yrs. Watched Scotty since then and bought a battery and alternator tester to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
If a tire shop does mechanical work..exit stage left is generally a good idea.
NTB also forgot to put 2 of my valve cover caps back on and the tires they sold me wore out way quicker than normal.
Have since used Discount Tire and they are magnitudes better.

Always buy a tire tread test for 2 dollars, and test the tread yourself. Then you know when they are bad. A lot of places tell you you need tires, when you don’t.

I normally work on my car in every aspect possible, but I needed an exhaust flange welded before the cat converter so I went to a local Midas here in NJ. Most shops don’t have a welder, and being such a simple job, I figured Midas would be sufficient. I get the car back and legit a week later it starts operating horribly. The dash lights begin to flash everything known to man and I no longer want to risk it and drive so I get it towed back to Midas to figure out what happened. They end up giving me a 2,200$ bill saying that I put to much Marvel Mystery oil in it and it needs an entire overhaul. I called other shops and nobody could figure it out. So I began to research and experiment. Low and behold, when Midas welded that flange, my Cat Converter became clogged (Probably from Debris) and wouldn’t allow back pressure to release. I disconnected the cat and the car drove like new again after I replaced plugs, injectors, carb cleaned intake, and oil change. Midas currently doesn’t know that I figured out what happened and my Father informed me to complain to the Department Of Consumer affairs. He told me that a State Rep is like a worst case scenario for any shop because it puts them on the map with the State and higher ups become informed of the malpractice. Good honest mechanics like Scotty are few, and far between.
    Another great Video Scotty..

I didn’t need a new bushings front bushings on my control arms and a company here in Arizona tried to sell me the whole control arms which came out over a thousand dollars and knowing I’m not a mechanic professional but I’ve done mechanic work I told him really all you have to do is punch out the bushings and put in punching the new bushings and I’ll buy the bushings if you want me to I mean yeah a lot of these places want to rip you off

I got taken twice I’m afraid to take my 2000 Toyota Camry LE to a mechanic up here in Ashland Ky. The Camry was given to me by my cousin. It was his father’s Camry. I’m the 4th owner of the Camry. It needs a lot of work. Since I’m on a fixed income I buy parts I can afford. For a example I have a friend that works at Advance Auto Parts he told me to buy Suncore struts and shocks for my Camry so I did. I still don’t have them put on because I don’t know who to take it too. To me, your the only one that’s honest Scotty.

  33. Devin Stepp on April 5, 2022 at 6:24 am

I had a shop (0500 mechanics) in rexburg try to charge me 700 for replacing my rear drum brakes on my 05 matrix (it needed to be done) I said heck no, and I went across the street to les schwab, they did my rear brakes AND front drive axle replacements for 650.. (it needed axles replaced too, vibrated at high speed acceleration)
I would usually do this all myself, but my lift and tools are at my home in texas, and I’m in idaho for school..
Recently needed an oil change as well, all the shops around rexburg wanted to charge me 90-100 for a change with full synthetic ( they were booked for the next week and a half) I went out, bought my oil and filter and did it myself in a parking lot for 30 bucks in 20 minutes.. crazy how shops get people, especially in college towns, it’s sad.

  34. Robert Smith on April 5, 2022 at 6:24 am

Not gonna drop names but a very popular chain threatened to call the cops on a buddy because brake system was a hazard and proceeded to charge him over $1,100 for pads and rotors. Gees man. I just shook my head.

  35. November 7 2021 on April 5, 2022 at 6:26 am

Mr. Kilmer got it wrong again blaming managers. Yes, like other companies do they get incentives. Most often, they get fired. Service writers and store management are under intense abusive psychological pressure (bullying really) to preform and to say the right things politically. Upper / middle management is where the blame goes. Industry-wide management is part of a cronies political pack. Uneducated they have the mental attitude that terrorized our nation on January 6, 2021. Former mechanics themselves, they are dressed up street thugs driving expensive company cars. That’s where your money goes. As you’ve probably already noticed, jack-in-the-box repair shops and commercial parts stores have tremendous employee turnover. Worse, they do black list I saw it happening first hand. That’s a crime full stop. What’s sad about all this is that motorists won’t trust needed repairs and maintenance recommendations. Also, having good tread alone doesn’t mean your tires are good. Scott is right about checking the owner’s manual that you can find in the glove-box or online easily. Following manufacturer suggested maintenance intervals are import because they do save you money. Don’t neglect your car’s maintenance schedule.

  36. thegreendank1 on April 5, 2022 at 6:26 am

I have a series idea for you. You go state to state in the u.s. And you find good, honest mechanics around the u.s. so everyone can feel safe bringing a car to a mechanic. I’ve never felt good when I bring a car somewhere which is why I’ve been learning to do it myself. But sometimes you need a professional. You are a national treasure scotty and when you pass I’ll erect a statue in your honor. Keep up the great work.

I went to a chain shop for an inspection on a Lexus rx300. The front passenger turn signal in the bumper was burned out. They wanted about $30 for a bulb replacement. When I told them I would take it home and fix it myself the broke the plastic housing. When I got home it was dangling by the wires.

Check the date of manufacture on the tires. After 6 years, the should be replaced because the rubber is drying up. Even “new” tires can be several years old.
