After 40 years of driving hgv I really can’t understand why anyone would want to drive a truck for a living, usually forget any kind of family life, expect to be working when people are still asleep, expect to be still working when people are at home with there families, expect to earn what seems to be not bad money, till you realise you have done a normal persons working week and half again (60 + hours a week) then be faced with "what do you mean you don’t want to work Saturday" or, "your running away on Sunday because you have a delivery at the other end of the country at 5am on Monday morning!!! Then on top of all that if anything goes wrong on the road it will be your fault because your the professional!!! During lock down the NHS was given a discount at supermarkets, will deserved, teachers also got a discount, why when they were not in schools, what did drivers get who mainly worked through the pandemic, an occasional free Costa coffee, that’s how valued we are. But don’t worry about all this because you will have a shiny truck to drive, just a shame that won’t give you a nice life and pay the mortgage.
Take advice from someone who has been driving all his life DON’T DO IT.

i’m thinking of attempting to become a trucker. my only real concern is that obviously drivers need to take regular breaks, but are you expected to sleep half way through a job if its a long one? i’ve always struggled with sleep and can never understand people who can just sleep on command. i need a minimum of 2 to 3 hours just tossing and turning EVERY NIGHT before i can get off. no matter how tired i am. will this be a detriment? i know the UK isnt very big, and i dont have any intention of going over to europe if i can avoid it.

  13. steliyan stoyanov on November 18, 2023 at 5:33 am

NO MONEY IN THE DRIVING THAT IS THE TRUE. don t loose your time just go and start proper job. this is not including driving. if you want to work every night till 5 in the morning or to start 2 in the morning including the weekends for 12.00 13.00 pounds go driving. don t even think to spend 10 000 pounds for licence and start driving. for every small mistake the company will fired you strait away. if you want minimum 12 hours shift and unpaid overtime go. and there is much more.

You must be joking, the best way to start lorry driving is DON’T BOTHER IN THE FIRST PLACE. It’s a rotten job and you will be employed by rotten employers, most employers mistrust their drivers, and some even despise their drivers. You get no respect, a potential for huge fines if you make a mistake, especially in London. Also there is the completely unnecessary CPC, which is expensive and if you know what you’re doing, a load of b******s. I should know I was a Class 1 Driver for over 35 years. These days the lorries are smashing to drive, but that’s where the good bit begins and ends. 🤬🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

  15. raja renju on November 18, 2023 at 5:36 am

I never drove a lorry or a trailer and I am nee in UK how can I gain some experience i truck driving

  16. Julian Day on November 18, 2023 at 5:38 am

First of all get a certificate to say that you are totally insane, show it to a trainer then you are roped in. They will then proceed to fleece you of every penny you’ve got. If you eventually pass you can get a job with some tin pot firm who will pay peanuts and treat you like shit. Good luck !

  17. cdkmonkey on November 18, 2023 at 5:42 am

Don’t do it , spend your money on getting your tickets for plant , 360 , dumper truck , alterrian fork lift , etc , £16 + p/h , no nights out , no ministry , no in cab monitoring , no f##king shit car drivers , don’t do it ,

  49. Douglas McGehee on November 18, 2023 at 6:14 am

Hello from America. I’m a professional driver too. I drive busses for a living but will be driving trucks in a few weeks. I do have an issue that I would be grateful for some help with. My wife has always had this dream of moving to England and I’m thinking of going along with it. Neither one of us has ever been outside the United States. So I am completely clueless. Can you please walk me through on the process of transitioning from being fully licensed and working over here to being fully licensed and working in Britain?
