Car Industry: Emission Fraud | Investigation

Car Industry: Emission Fraud – ‘Dieselgate’ made headlines around the world. For deliberately cheating the system, Volkswagen were made to pay a record $20 billion fine. But, as this investigation shows, they were far from the only culprits. We met the researchers who uncovered the cheat devise and investigate the dangers posed by NOx emissions.

Car Industry: Emission Fraud (2017)
Director: Jules Giraudat
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Also Known As: Cash Investigation: Diesel, The Industry’s Smokescreen

Synopsis:
We also look at Peugeot-Citroen, now the subject of a judicial enquiry and also Renault, accused by investigators of consciously defrauding the emissions tests. Our source from inside Renault reveals that his job was to ensure that the car’s emissions stayed under the standard while in lab conditions only, with no regard for the real impact of pollution in cities. And there is no doubt that air pollution kills. We meet a team of researchers from MIT who say there have been 4000 premature deaths across Europe due to NOx excessive emissions due to diesel cars marketed as ‘clean’.

Thirty people in France are now taking the state to court for not protecting them. Ministers claim that no-one knew about the problem until recently. But we reveal the truth. We meet the ex-European Commissioner for the Environment who first raised this issue in 2011 long before the VW scandal. And surely now that the scandal has been revealed, things will change for the better? Recently in Europe all 27 member states voted to increase the allowed standard for NOx emissions to more than double. VW and Renault are having a great year with record sales and growth. The only real losers are children living in cities and people with asthma and breathing difficulties.

There’s 30 or so volcanos go off every day pushing out tons of pollution they can’t put a DPF on them it’s all a money scam

I love diesel engines, the best 4wd engine available. Where I live, we don’t have autobarns, or highways. Not everyone lives in the city

It the government that’s the fraud.

Way worse than cars are small engines; lawnmowers, generators, weed whippers, etc.

CO2 fear is the most destructive force on earth. It’s given to well meaning people by utility CEOs poised to make trillions by giving them that fear. I see no children slaves in this film, not the fact China is building 3 new coal fired power plants a month to keep up with EV products. Let’s see the NOX testing from those stacks or the mercury. Solar and wind are not efficient, take 10Xs the land to produce equivalent energy
Diesel is quite efficient, dependable, and virtually produces and delivers all our food and everything else. Everything is toxic at some dose. The question is what’s more toxic, EV vehicles or diesel? It’s just a matter of moving the emissions somewhere else.

Not to excuse VW, but had it been a domestic brand authorites would never have reacted so swiftly and determined.

Volkswagen should have been kicked out of our country permanently but they were allowed to get away with it. I can make the promise. I’ll never purchase anything with their name on it.

It’s all about the bottom line,…. profit!

To design, tool up, train, test and repeat to meet new emissions targets and have suitable performance eat into profits., I understand what is involved in trying to reach these emissions targets, it is extremely difficult.
However lying to the public is not on and ALL manufacturers involved should be held accountable.

Overlooking the fact that when you live in high density populated areas, yes, your gonna smell/breathe more contaminants, Regulating an entire country from testing in a highly saturated locale is disingenuous at best. If you want clean air stop living on top of one another, simple.

Legal limits??? What is that. Something that politicians who think they are untouchable order the industry and which is impossible to achieve. Utopia is not reality and those who believe in it should go back to the cave and not use cars and planes to travel. Oops, in the cave they will use wood for the fire on which they will roast the meat. Fire produces smoke and we are in trouble again.

Diesel engines contribute to what percentage of pollutants, NOX, that contribute to health problems??!!!
This is all about nothing and drives up costs for insignificant gains!!!

  18. @LWRC on June 6, 2024 at 9:13 pm

150 deaths for all of Europe from NOX??!!! What’s the total population of Europe and what percentage is that??!!! How do we know these 150 deaths came from NOX and not something else??!!!
Maybe the French should cut back smoking cigarettes instead of blaming the deaths on diesel engines!!!

  19. @georgechronis3169 on June 6, 2024 at 9:16 pm

When the Boss said that little 2.0 liter engine is emitting more than 40 times a tractor rig I knew this video was a scam. Even without any emissions treatment there is no way that a 2.0 liter diesel engine could out emit NOX an 8 liter diesel engine.

  20. @bugsnapoles3635 on June 6, 2024 at 9:17 pm

What a surprise, still demonizing diesel fuel. Yet everyone benefits from diesel fuel to produce electricity, run generators, run tractors for farming, make ships sail the seas, transport food, supplies, people, medicines, construction materials, manufacturing, run factories and many more. What else is there that pruduces NOX other than diesel cars? Ban diesel fuel and everyone suffers. Oh except the rich and powerful.
