It’s not that good. The whole experience is not worth the time or money. From October 6, 2020 to July 11, 2021 I traveled on 4 of the 5 cross country amtrak routes in a roomette. Air conditioning is the biggest problem next to on board sewer system. If you compare the price of flying, amtrak is not worth the money. About 50% of the amtrak employees are rude and unhelpful. Inter city routes like, New york to Washington DC are great and that’s what amtrak should stick with. These cross country trains need to go.

I had to book a family room instead of a roomette for my solo travel in October. Just wondering others experience in family room vs roomette. I had to reschedule my trip and prices were way higher for the roomette so I had to accept the lower level family room. I know I’ll have to climb stairs every time for meals or going to observation car. I’m 72 so not sure how bad that will be. Maybe stay in the observation car as much as possible during the day and go to dining car for meals. Also concerned with safety of items in the lower level while I’m upstairs. Is the a room attendant keeping an eye on the family rooms like there is on the top level with the roomettes? I appreciate any experiences or advise given. This is my first train adventure and am going cross country. Thanks…. Just as a follow up. The Coast starlight I would not take it again. But the California Zephyr, I would take once a month if I could afford it. There’s a world of difference between the 2 trains. The quality of the staff on board the train was exceptional on the California Zephyr. The food was great and your traveling companions were mostly people who were actually travelers and wanted to share experiences. On the coast starlight there were a lot of rude people Who were just traveling up-and-down the coast of California and using it like a bus. People who paid minimal money to ride this coach and were walking around in the sleeping car areas. And a very inefficient and unconcerned railroad staff on my trip in October. Not a good experience on the coast doorlight. Best experience of my travel on the California Zephyr

I really like the cabin with the car idea but it’s not offered from New England to the south and it’s more than a flight. In a capitalist world, time is money…unfortunately. All my family is up there.. I hate the drive and hate figuring out ways to get around one I’m there if I fly.
I wish rails would get more subsidies than air travel… Air travel is destroying the planet (more cuz of the military than anything but I hate to promote that shit out of principal). Need a geologist lobbyist? lol. Half joking. Don’t think I could sell my soul for the $.

The coaches should be Re-Painted for Passenger/Freight trains.
