2024* Nissan Frontier S (Base) / Simple Tacoma Alternative!
2024* Nissan Frontier S (Base) / Simple Tacoma Alternative!
With the rising cost and complexity of trucks, the Nissan Frontier is a safe haven for those that want something straightforward. However, this does come at a cost when comparing it to the competent Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator and I suppose the Honda Ridgeline too.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test drive the Frontier for this video!

Sadly with an automatic transmission. The good thing with halogen lights is that the bulbs are easy to replace with LEDs, which are brighter, whiter, and last longer. I swapped my wife’s old sealed beams to H4s for under $100. Now she has better lights than my crappy Jeep HIDs.
I will never buy a Tacoma. I love Toyota SUV’s but the TACO is so over-rated….and the rust issues that lingered for 20 years.
Can anyone tell me what the seating position feels like in this truck? Tried the ’21 and ’23 Taco and felt like I was sitting on the floor and couldn’t see over the hood as a 5’6" driver.
Used? 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2019 are very good. Many ways better than the competition.
If they omitted 90% of the worthless infotainment BS out the cost would drop a lot. They need to make a 4×4 work/adventure truck for under $20k.
Why bother grabbing a small "Tacoma replacement" when the price for the Frontier is just as outrageous
One of the few Nissans without their awful CVT, and they put a dicey Mercedes transmission in it? No thanks.
I have a 2020 Frontier SV 4×4 long bed crew cab with 55k miles. This was the first year for the vq38 / 9 speed. Zero issues so far. It tows well and does what you want it. It’s easy to clean and I have zero complaints except the turning radius. The largest difference in driving the 9 speed vs traditional lower geared transmissions is you need to be deliberate in the throttle asking it to do what you want. It likes to rev and is playful. I really enjoy the truck and will have it for a long time. It’s just good at nearly everything.
What ever happened to the Nissan that were made inexpence and made tough like the Datsun 620? Oh i know, when they changed the name "Nissan "and were made cheaper.
Hate to break it to nissan fanboys but nissan is being forced into a turbo 4. Go ask them yourselves. They are just behind the game like always. This new frontier is the same truck from 2019 except new body work
Does it have a CVT transmission?
Wish it could be had with a six-speed manual
Nice video. Please show payload sticker in your reviews. The manufacturer numbers are usually inflated for any real world build.
stop making my 17 4×4 frontier be a regret!
I put crank windows in my truck.
Owned two, the 1st one @ 5 years kept blowing the rear axle seal(three times), liked the truck so traded in for a 2015, 2nd one(pro 4x) 4 years and 26000miles leaked coolant into the transmission, so never again. Best of luck to y’all, maybe the newer models are more reliable.
I like to pump the gas for 2 or 3 seconds to run through the gears. I will get about 26 mpg if I try but I am happy with more than 22. I’ve had the truck automatically stop itself while reversing and I thought it’s will to survive was cute. It also likes to beep when it senses a collision.
If I was going to get a Pick up this is the one .That foolish talk about cheap plastic on the inside is irrelevent to a real pick up driver.FUNCTION before form. no 4 cylinder turbos or other non sense is wanted
Be nice if Nissan offered a single cab with a four cylinder and stick shift, bare bones truck. Not everyone can afford a crew cab or extended cab.
If they made it with rear seat delete in the king cab (Toyota’s utility package) with manual locks, window, transmission and power mirrors, they would have a true midsized workhorse.
I’ve had more issues with my 2022 Frontier then I did with my 09 Ranger. Fuel gauge is not accurate, the truck comes with two different style cabin filters, door lock squeaks, drops too many gears and revs high rpm when going up a hill not pulling or anything in the back, the radio has issues with my S23 Ultra connected. To change the oil you have to remove a little door to change the filter the groove they add oil pools. If I know now and waited I would have opted for a Tacoma.
I actually love that you don’t have to get lane departure or any of that garbage sensor stuff this will be the package I go with since I will lift it my self don’t need the pro
Bring back single cab please. We need it
Ill tell you what I like.. I like an effing overhead grab handle for the drivers side.. wtf is with these companies that dont include this?
The 24 Renault Frontier
This is my favorite truck in the segment, simplicity is best to me especially these days
I’d really like to see wheel options as those shown are very stock.
It’s a work truck yeah some of us haul more than golf clubs and our family around. And to us Durability and longevity Are the most important things. Looks like a good truck
I had Nissan for over 2 decades all manual transmission (cars, trucks, SUVs). But with no manual transmission option on the 2024 Frontier eliminates it from my very short list. Which is now super short.
I do not need nor want more computerized stuff on my vehicle. For me power locks, windows, mirrors, seat are border line too "hi- tech" but I can live with it. Keyless starters, electronic parking break, automatic transmission, start/stop engine, hybrid or electronic engine(s), electronic dash, among many other stuff is stuff I can not have on my vehicles. I guess if I want a Frontier I will need to get an older used one.
I know the Frontier does not use the incredibly unreliable Jatco CVT transmissions. But I never had (or personally heard of) a single issue on the Nissan (Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda, Isuzu) manual transmissions. Yes, the clutch can wears out but ~$1K later (usually less) and is as good as new.
Needs a headlight upgrade, wheel upgrade and a plastic bedliner. Why wouldn’t a nine speed transmission downshift willingly?
The one drawback to this truck is it uses the same junky Mercedez 9-speed automatic Chrysler has been using in its cars.
This tranny has a poor reliability record.
Way to sum it up. It’s exactly what I want. Except the manual side view mirrors. It’s like Nissan is daring me to be manly and they called my bluff.
Great review! +1
Best in class.
I’m in the market for one of these trucks and have been looking at dealer websites to see what’s available. I have yet to see one of these plain models at any dealer I’ve checked with.
Looking at buying one, anyone know of the engines water pump is belt driven or chain?
Being the owner of a 1st gen Tacoma, I think Toyota has opened the door for some competition with the latest offering and pricing. I like the 4×4 crew cab long bed, just wish they still offered a manual.
Ya except it can’t tow shit
I want a truck to do truck things. I plan on getting a used Pro4x with 50k miles.
V6, 4WD, leaf springs, solid axle, minimal tech and option… Take my money!
lol….$31K+ for a base truck LMAO, LMAO. Why are you even uploading this? That is not a base model. For that money you can keep it. What a joke.
Good truck for pizza and liquor store delivery LOL. I’d probably get tired of the base “S” after a year. That outside mirror with no electronic switch to adjust it is just to CHEAP! Got to have electronic mirror control switch and delete that worthless rear seat, just make the back area all storage, make the front seats more comfortable, make that infotainment better, add telescopic steering wheel and retune that motor so the torque kicks in sooner in lower rpm’s for a better driving experience.
It’s a better truck than Toyota at least they have a frame that will last. I bought one had a Toyota the Toyota want know where the nissan went they run a lot better and cost a lot less
Best deal in rhe market
The base needs power mirror
5k too expensive
The Gladiator is ranked the worst reliable truck to own for 2023.
You are NOT 6 ft 3
I love my 23 S model king cab
I checked in my area and no Frontier 4×4 4 door in S trim for not even close to $31,000, try closer to $36,000.
Even a 4×4 S trim package in King Cab configuration is more than the $31,000 advertised here.
