A small correction. The idea of the Volkswagen already existed before Hitler. However, he commissioned the car.

Easy to drive, easy to fix, easy to modify, and, most importantly, FUN!

my mother had a VW beetle (known as a bubble in Denmark) back in the days she was working in eldercare at the elderly own home. but one cold winter in 1980’s it was incredible cold here. so cold all cars with water cooling froze over. meaning my mother was the ONLY one driving. because of the aircool bubble. but sadly few year after clutch gave up. changed and half year later it went again. so she had to scrap it. was getting to exspensive to keep running. but she misses her car.

You can literally feel the smell of gasoline, old leather, feel the vibration under your legs! Haha, this brings me back :’) I lived in post-Yugoslavia Croatia, and there were so many old cars back then, such as Fiat 126p, or Zastava 128. My dad owned both, I hated them, but now that I look back it’s really nostalgic hahaha

I drove a Super Beetle from Orange Beach, AL to Nivarre, FL. It drove smoother than my (new at the time), ‘91 Toyota pickup!

if you’re over 50 there’s a good chance you owned one!

A 1973 Super Beetle was the first car I bought. I don’t how many trips I made between Fort Meade and my home in Kentucky and back, but I bet it was close to 100. Once I put on radial tires it really could handle and brake better. The cool thing about the car was that I could take out the rear seat bottom and I made a wooded bike rack that could hold two bicycles. I had to let the car go at about 110,000 miles as the engine was on its last legs. It would have cost more to replace or rebuild the engine. Those air-cooled engines could not last forever due high engine heat. My mechanic said it was better to sell it and get something new, unfortunately I bought a 1978 Civic. I should have kept the Beetle, as I had more trouble with the Honda than the VW. I wish I had kept the VW.

Adorable car! Look soooo much fun to drive. I love how easy it looks to shift. I sat in the backseat of a bug once, but my dream is to actually own one if I ever win the lottery. lol

    I owned a 1969 Beetle and a 1973 Super Beetle.
The 1969 Beetle had a swing arm rear suspension that would try to kill you when you drove it like you were a LeMans pro…lol.
Trying to get the rear end suspension to not dig in and flip the back of the car over was the magic of young man’s reflexes and stomping brakes and smashing on gas pedals.
Not to mention the very bizarre front suspension trying to fold under the front of the car as you dug it into turns.
Hey, no hate for the car, it was never designed to be driven like that.

I actually rebuilt the engine in that car with new cylinder sleeves , pistons and rings and new cylinder heads..
    What simple wonderful engine design.

With exhaust heater boxes that treated you like you were in Aushwitz in the gas chamber.
You have never been colder in the winter then in a VW Beetle going down the interstate at 70 with less then zero heat becuase the exhaust air boxes had to disconnected or the exhaust fumes would kill you.
Still, I had a friend that had quality genuine VW new exhaust boxes that worked like a charm and he always had quality heat.
The Brazilian aftermarket exhaust boxes were trash.

The 1973 Super Beetle was different as it had a full independent rear suspension.
But as it wore out the rear end of it ,it started doing all kinds of weird things.
One day, I was only going 35 miles per hour in third gear, on a wet road, had great tires and everything .
I was going around a rising left turn on ramp to a local road, the road was just slightly damp and the rear end of the car just let go, nice and easy and nothing I did would stop it from going around.
I tried to accelerate through it but the car was not having that.
I just gently eased off the gas in the slick , a no no in a Beetle or an old Porsche and let the back of the car come around and once in the grass, since it had slowed alot , I just applied the brakes and stopped the car safely.

All of that said, I still love the true old school VW Beetles.
They truly are cars for the people.
Cheap to own ,operate and maintain and just great little cars.
We will never see their like again.
And to every person smart enough and driven enough to keep one of these legendary VW Beetles on the road and let me time travel with you as you sputter by ,with that perfectly running air cooled flat four happily singing it’s perfect song , I thank you.

They were neat – my Dad had one. They were not safe in a crash which is why they were phased out in 1975.

My first new car was a 1975 Le Grande Bug, the blue one. It came with a rosewood dash, rack and pinion steering, sunroof, corduroy/leatherette upholstery, and it was the first year it included fuel injection. The differences between this 74 and my 75, was the rack and pinion steering and the fuel injection which gave it a couple more horsepower. The top speed AND cruising speed was actually 81mph. On a straight flat road. But you could drive them flat out all day, which was maybe barely 4000 rpm. And I took that thing from Vancouver to Mexico, Vancouver to the east coast and back through the Midwest. It was great on the highway, it would just settle down and go for hours. Plus the seats were very comfortable, and you sat quite high.
    The best car ever.

I recall being in Cancun at this place where I put the headphones on and played a few tracks on somebody else’s DJ system at a hostel and while I was there for a few weeks, there was some body that pulled up in a Volkswagen very similar like the ones are being shown next to the hostel snd after a slight moment I thought if there was any connection between cartel or the comedian and is love for the Volkswagen cars

  32. Richard Hill on February 26, 2023 at 1:14 pm

I bought a slightly used 74 Super Beetle when I got out of the Army in early 1977. It was so clean and ran great and believe it or not it never leaked a drop of oil. The only VW I’ve owned that I can say that about. Wonderful memories from that car and those years. I sold it about 4 years later and still want to kick my own butt for doing it!

  45. ash 68 on February 26, 2023 at 1:33 pm

That was almost as good as driving oneself! If only it wasn’t so difficult to have realistic engine sounds in a video. As far as I remember the distinctive sound of a beetle engine is much more pronounced in reality. A sound engineer would have to put in a lot of work to improve this I think. Maybe using the Dummy head recording method.
